    • An apparatus and methods for analyzing feet which utilize matrixes of pressures sensors and optical sensors connected to a controller and a monitor. An apparatus of the invention includes a housing which houses a controller and a monitor and defines left and right foot wells for receiving left and right feet, respectively. The floor of each foot well includes a pressure pad assembly which includes a matrix of pressure sensor contacts covered by a variably resistive pressure pad to form pressure sensor matrixes. A digital signal processor normalizes and smoothes the pressure data for display on the monitor. Infrared LED's and phototransistors are located around the perimeter of each foot well and are utilized to measure the length, width, and heights of a foot. A microprocessor addresses each LED and phototransistor separately. The controller reads data created by the DSP and IR microprocessor, calculates additional data, and displays the resulting data on the monitor. According to one method, the pressure sensors and optical sensors are utilized to determine, among others, foot length, foot width, shoe size, foot volume, foot shape, force distribution, pronation, arch type, and recommended last type. In other methods, the DSP and IR microprocessors provide data which enable the controller to perform calculations and comparisons to display orthotic prescriptions or insole selection information, as well as medical information related to center of pressure and postural sway analysis which is useful in diagnosing and treating a large variety of medical problems.

    • The invention relates to knife blades and their methods of production. Whilst it has long been known that the surface hardness and wear resistant properties of metal objects can be enhanced by a hard surface provided on them, the effective employment of this in relation to knife blades has proved difficult to achieve. The object of the invention is to provide a knife blade with a cutting edge of a harder material than the body of the blade, and the objective is met by a construction comprising a v-shaped cutting edge formed on a blank and such that the cutting tip lies substantially centrally of the width of the blank characterised in that one side face of the v-shaped cutting edge is provided with a coating of a material harder than the material of the blank, the actual cutting edge being formed wholly of the harder material, and the coating having a columnar crystal structure that extends away from the surface of the blank and to the outer face of the coating.

    • An improved joinder method and system which allow either individual vertical columns or prefabricated module assemblies which incorporate a plurality of said vertical columns to be quickly and accurately lowered into position on top of one or more similarly configured underlying columns. In one preferred embodiment the uppermost ends of the underlying columns comprise a portion of a similar previously installed module located immediately below the particular module being lifted into place. The improved columnar joint of the present invention can be utilized to automatically guide the prefabricated modules into proper location onto the uppermost ends of the underlying columns such that when the lowermost ends of the vertical columns being installed come to rest upon the uppermost ends of the underlying columns, the opposed ends of the vertical columns are sufficiently aligned with one another that they will readily support the weight of the module without any risk of shifting when the lifting tension is relieved. Self-aligning column joints of the present invention are also utilized to rigidly and permanently secure the vertically aligned column or columns to one another without the need to maintain any tension in the lifting device used to elevate the module into position once the lifting tension has been relieved. The method of the present invention may be employed to install a multiplicity of identical modules one on top of the other or to install a multiplicity of adjacent modules all at a given level within a structure without the need to utilize double support columns immediately adjacent one another where the adjacent modules fit together.

    • An automatic loading machine is provided for aligning and loading a predetermined amount of elongated strips of product into individual containers wherein batches of elongated strips are periodically discharged from a product feed. A turret assembly is provided which has a plurality of buckets and each of the batches from the product feed is received by a separate bucket. The turret assembly is continuously vibrated and, as each bucket moves through a horizontal path, the batches of elongated strips carried therein become somewhat more aligned. The strips are dropped out of the buckets onto a flight conveyor and are conveyed to a discharge point where each batch is transferred into a separate container.
