    • A method of detecting and measuring separately the components of vector dynamics on the surface of a vibrating object comprises directing three beams of coherent light onto a common spot on the surface. Each of these beams has a known optical frequency. Two are arranged symmetrically about a normal to the surface at the point of incidence and the third is arranged asymmetrically about the normal with respect to both the first and second beams. Superposition of each beam with the others on the surface produces scattered light embodying characteristic beat or carrier signals equal to the difference in frequencies between the beams. Vector dynamics including velocity and displacement of the vibrating surface induces Doppler shifts in the beams, which, in turn results in a modulation of the carrier frequencies resulting from the superposition of the beams. Each carrier frequency is then isolated and demodulated to produce a signal corresponding to various components of the vector dynamics on the surface that cause the modulation. Further analysis extracts information about the frequency and magnitude of resolved vector dynamics on the surface. The method can be applied at several locations on the object's surface to determine vector dynamics at several points simultaneously.

    • A method and apparatus herein supply one or more media characteristics of a continuous media material (such as printing media) being supplied to rollers of an apparatus (such as a printing apparatus). The method and apparatus adjust the position of at least one of the rollers/shafts, relative to other rollers/shafts, based on the media characteristics to cause the media material to exhibit a target resonance frequency when being processed through the rollers. The method and apparatus can also identify excitation frequencies of vibrations produced by the apparatus as the apparatus feeds the continuous media material along the rollers and set the target resonance frequency at a value that is different from the excitation frequencies to prevent the apparatus from exciting the continuous media material at or near a resonant frequency of the processing system transporting the continuous media material.

    • An apparatus for reducing registration errors in a media handling device. The apparatus including an image-bearing member having sheets individually pass across the image-bearing member. Each sheet pass corresponds to one of a series of iterations between the image-bearing member and the sheets. The image-bearing member is operatively coupled to a controller for regulation motion of the image-bearing member. The controller receives input signals representing at least one measured disturbance. Each disturbance being defined by a pattern of image-bearing member movement away from and substantially returning to a reference state of motion. A repetition of the pattern being coincident with at least one of the iterations, wherein based on the measured disturbance, the reference state and an indication associated with when the pattern will repeat, a modified signal is generated for the actuator to adjust the image-bearing member motion in coordination with the indication.
