    • A system and method for watermarking data that includes a client device, a file system manager, a file server, and a storage network. The file system manager sets watermark control information. The file server includes: (1) a file writing process including a file watermark examination procedure and an action procedure, the action procedure determining an action based on a result of the file watermark examination; and (2) a file reading process including a watermark definition procedure, a file handle/memory preparation procedure, a file data copy procedure, and a watermark insertion procedure. During a read request the watermark definition procedure determines whether a file to be read is to be watermarked based on a user at the client device that requested to read the file. Whether a write request is processed or not is based on the user and whether the file to be written contains a watermark.

    • A system for enabling more efficient processing of query operation of a database includes a query provider coupled to a database system, by a network. A storage system is coupled to each of the query provider and the database system. The database system includes a return path selector which chooses whether to return the results of queries to the query provider by storing the results into the shared storage system, or by sending them over the network. There may also be provided the capability of storing query data in the storage system for use by the database in executing the queries. A key is used to locate the results or the query data in the storage system, and another information field is used to control access to the stored query data and/or results.

    • A support method for helping the user find a desired program from a collection of recorded television programs easily and quickly, and a recording/reproducing apparatus using this method. The recorded program viewing support system, when recording a television program, records electronic program information on the program, classifies the electronic program information according to predefined program category criteria, and successfully assigns predefined category numbers (recording channels) to the program to be recorded. Before the user views a recorded program, the user specifies the number of the recorded channel. A recorded channel number is allocated with a category item and hence the user can easily know the contents of the recorded programs. The user can change the channel number successively or directly specify it by using a remote controller to find a desired program easily and quickly. When disk media such as HDD and DVD-RAM are used as a storage in particular, the recorded programs can be randomly accessed allowing the user to zap through recorded programs.

    • A method for copying data to multiple remote sites includes transmitting data from a first volume in a primary storage system to a back-up volume provided in a secondary storage system. The primary storage system is located at a primary site, and the secondary storage system is located at a first remote site from the primary site. The data from the first volume in the primary storage system is copied to a second volume in the primary storage system using a point in time (PiT) as a reference point of time for the copying. The second volume is provided with a first time consistent image of the first volume with respect to the reference point of time. The data from the second volume in the primary storage system is transferred to a third volume in a ternary storage system at a second remote site. The third volume is provided with a second time consistent image of the second volume with respect to the reference point of time, where the second time consistent image is a mirror image of the first time consistent image. The data from the third volume is transferred to a fourth volume in the ternary storage system. The fourth volume is provided with a third time consistent image. In the ternary storage, either of the third volume or fourth volume can always keep time consistent image of the first volume.

    • Data stored in a data storage system is hashed to generate a hash value. The hash value and a request for a time stamp are then sent to a time stamping authority. A time stamp token and/or a time stamp certificate is received from the time stamping authority. The time stamp token includes a time stamp and the hash value, and may be encrypted using a private key of the time stamping authority. The time stamp token and/or time stamp certificate is then stored with, for example, a reference to the data being stored in the data storage system. The time stamp token and/or time stamp certificate may then be used to validate the data being stored and the time stamp.
