    • A display apparatus includes display cells, arranged in a row direction and a column direction, each having a color filter and an optical modulation device for modulating a brightness and a color of an incident light by voltage application. The optical modulation device modulates color of the incident light over at least three colors, and the color filter is provided in a set of color filters including a color filter which transmits light of two colors in the above-mentioned at least three colors. Two types of display modes consisting of a large pixel display mode using a group of display cells containing color filters of all of the above-mentioned at least three colors as a display unit and a small pixel display mode using groups of display cells each containing color filters of a part of the above-mentioned set of color filters as display units are executed.

    • An active matrix display apparatus includes an active matrix display panel comprising a plurality of pixels arranged in a matrix in a row direction and a column direction, each pixel being constituted by a plurality of subpixels; and a drive circuit for applying a voltage to each of the subpixels so that a polarity of the voltage is inverted at a predetermined period in each of a row direction and a column direction. The plurality of subpixels are arranged in the row direction at a period different from half of the predetermined period of polarity inversion of the voltage in the row direction, thus providing flicker-less color display device even when general driver ICs for dot inversion drive are used.

    • A manufacturing method of a liquid crystal optical device is provided including an alignment film forming step of forming an alignment film containing silicon oxide on a substrate, and a liquid crystal cell forming step of disposing a pair of substrates at least one of which the alignment film has been formed on, opposite to each other interposing a liquid crystal therebetween. In the alignment film forming step, the substrate surface is bombarded with a plasma beam generated by vacuum arc discharge using a cathode containing silicon, where the substrate is disposed on the course of the plasma beam obliquely with an angle. When the plasma beam bombards the substrate surface, plasma ions in the plasma beam have higher kinetic energy or higher flux density than plasma ions in a plasma beam which, if bombarding the substrate obliquely at the angle, form a film having a column structure.

According to the present invention, changes in color tone depending on temperature are restrained.
