    • A quasi one-dimensional focal plane array for vision scanners which records a portion of an image of a bar code label which is substantially less than the entire image of the bar code label. The focal plane array has more than 1000 columns of pixels and less than 100 rows of pixels for producing the image of the portion of a bar code label. Additional portions are scanned by the focal plane array as the portions move across the focal plane array. A vision scanner employing the quasi-one-dimensional focal plane array requires only enough memory to store the image of the portion of the bar code label. Each image is recorded, stored, and decoded in turn. The image of the bar code label may be demagnified. A system employing such a vision scanner is located at a distance high enough from an article conveyor to provide a substantially uniform depth of field, despite variations in the height of the articles.

    • A bar image enhancement system and method for vision scanners which divides an image of an article having a bar code label into groups of pixels, with each pixel having an intensity value, and which minimizes processing time by employing simple algebra. The system includes a camera for generating an analog signal representing the image. Processing circuitry converts the analog signal into a digital signal. A controller divides the image into groups, determines a contrast value for predetermined groups by subtracting the minimum intensity value from the maximum intensity of each group.

    • The disclosed bar code reader includes an auto-focusing component for rapidly producing in focus images. An imaging system makes use of an aiming pattern that impinges upon the coded indicia of a target. The imaging system includes a light monitoring pixel array and a focusing lens that is fixed with respect to the pixel array for transmitting an image of the target object onto the pixel array. The imaging system also includes a movable mirror mounted for movement along a path of travel to reflect light passing through the focusing lens onto the pixel array. A drive motor moves the mirror relative the lens to adjust a focus of an image of the object formed at the pixel array. An automatic focusing component of the imaging system analyzes the aiming pattern reflected from the target object and projected onto the pixel array by the lens. The automatic focusing component issues commands to the drive motor causing the mirror to move along its path of travel to a suitable position for properly focusing the target object onto the pixel array.
