    • Exemplary methods and systems are disclosed herein that may help to dynamically adjust page-transmission power based on the amount of concatenation being applied to a page. An exemplary method involves: (i) before transmission of a page to a mobile station by an access network, the access network identifying any concatenation that is being applied to the page; (ii) based at least in part on the concatenation that is being applied to the page, the access network selecting a page-transmission power for the page; and (iii) the access network transmitting the page to the mobile station at the selected page-transmission power. In an exemplary embodiment, a base station may increase the page-transmission power as the amount of concatenation increases, which may help to improve the paging success rate (PSR) for concatenated pages, among other benefits.

    • An access network may be maintaining data indicating which of its coverage areas have a short occupancy time. The access network may then conduct a first paging of an access terminal in each coverage area in a first set of coverage areas, the first set including a subset of coverage areas having a short occupancy time. Thereafter, the access network may determine that it has not received a response to the first paging from the access terminal during a first timeout period, which is preferably shorter than a predefined paging timeout period. In response, the access network may conduct a second paging of the access terminal in only each coverage area in the subset of coverage areas (i.e., the coverage area(s) in the first set of coverage areas that have the short occupancy time).

    • Exemplary methods and systems involve a determination of when a rapid page attempt should be made in the sector where a mobile station's last call ended, before zone-based paging is initiated. An exemplary method may involve a radio access network: (a) determining that a mobile station should be paged; (b) before sending the page, the RAN determining whether or not both: (i) a rapid page attempt to the mobile station is likely to succeed, wherein a last call of the mobile station ended in a sector within a first paging zone, and (ii) the rapid page attempt to the mobile station is likely to reduce paging-channel occupancy in the first paging zone; (c) if it is determined that both: (i) the rapid page attempt to the mobile station is likely to succeed and (ii) the paging-channel occupancy is above the threshold level in at least one other sector in the first paging zone, then the RAN making a rapid page attempt in the sector of the radio access network in which the last call ended; and (d) otherwise, the RAN using a zone-based paging scheme to page the mobile station.

    • A method and apparatus for improved idle handoff a mobile station in a wireless communication system. While idling in a particular sector of the system, the mobile station will select a target sector based on a determination that the target sector has the same number of channels as the current sector, such as the same number of paging channels and perhaps the same number of frequency channels as the current sector. The mobile station will then engage in an idle handoff from the current sector to the selected target sector. By striving to hand off to a sector that has the same number of channels, particularly the same number of paging channels, the mobile station may avoid having to hash onto a channel in the target sector and may thereby minimize the likelihood of missing a page message sent while the mobile station was busy hashing onto the channel.

    • A first wireless network serves a wireless device and generates loading information. A second wireless network also serves the wireless device and also generates loading information. The first and second wireless networks share a plurality of wireless access points. A paging system receives a page request for the wireless device for delivery over the first network. The paging system processes the loading information to determine if paging assistance from the second network is applicable. If so, the paging system transfers a first page to the second network for delivery to the wireless device. The paging system receives a page response from the wireless device over the second network and processes the response to identify the shared wireless access point serving the wireless device. The paging system transfers a second page to the first wireless network for delivery to the wireless device through the identified shared wireless access point.

    • A wireless communication device (WCD) may be able to acquire wireless service from preferred wireless coverage areas that are managed by the WCD's service provider. In some cases, the WCD may instead use wireless service from non-preferred wireless coverage areas of the service provider's roaming partners. In order to save roaming fees, the service provider's RAN may determine when the WCD is likely to roam to a non-preferred wireless coverage area. In response to this determination, the RAN may transmit a redirect message to the WCD, causing the WCD to switch from one preferred wireless coverage area to another preferred wireless coverage area. In some situations, the RAN may transmit such a redirect message because the WCD has reported that it has a low remaining battery life.

    • A method to manage a call in a communication system and an access node of the communication system are disclosed. The method includes receiving, by the communication system, a call request for a voice call from a first device to communicate with a second device, wherein the second device is a subscriber of the communication system, and transmitting, by the communication system to the first device, a first message comprising an indication that the second device is operating in a text message-only mode, when the second device is roaming and a roaming usage of the second device meets a roaming criteria. The access node may be configured to transmit to the first device the first message, when the first device requests to establish a call with the second device through the access node, the second device is roaming, and a roaming usage of the second device meets the roaming criteria.

    • A base station determines occupancy of a channel used for message communication and transmits channel occupancy data to access terminals operable to transmit messages via the channel. An access terminal receives characters for sending a text message via the channel and determines whether the channel occupancy exceeds an occupancy threshold. If the channel occupancy exceeds the threshold, the access terminal transmits characters of the text message to the base station via multiple messages. Each of those messages including a number of characters that does not exceed a maximum number of characters associated with the threshold. If the channel occupancy does not exceed the threshold, the access terminal transmits characters of the text message to the base station via a single message so long as the number of characters does not exceed a maximum number of characters for sending a complete text message to the base station via a single message.
