    • A virtual data storage system provides a method and apparatus for premigrating host-originated data files initially stored in a cache storage to selected storage volumes within a storage subsystem. A premigration list includes an entry for each cache data file eligible to be premigrated, or copied, to the storage subsystem. Each entry includes a data file identifier, a cache storage location, and a premigration delay criterion. The purpose of the premigration delay criterion is to ensure that the data files are written to the storage subsystem in a timely manner, but to also allow the host processing system to subsequently re-access data files written to the virtual data storage system without interference and delay from the premigration process. The cache data files are not premigrated until the corresponding premigration delay criterion has elapsed, or exceeded a predetermined threshold. In this manner, the premigration delay criterion can be adjusted as warranted by the performance of virtual data storage system or the host processing system.

    • A virtual data storage system provides a method and apparatus for adaptively throttling transfers into a cache storage to prevent an overrun in the cache storage. The virtual data storage system includes a storage interface appearing as a set of addressable, virtual storage devices, a cache storage for initially storing host-originated data files, storage devices for eventually storing the data files on a set of storage volumes, and a storage manager for directing the data files between the cache storage and the storage devices. An amount of available space in the cache storage, or a cache free space, is monitored against an adjustable cache space threshold. A storage throttle is computed when the cache free space drops below the cache space threshold. Additionally, a recall throttle is computed based on the cache free space and a number of storage devices reserved for recalling data files from the set of storage volumes. A maximum value of the storage throttle and the recall throttle is used to delay the storing of data files and the recalling of data files into the cache storage and to prevent overrunning the cache storage by completely depleting the cache free space.

    • An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for archiving log data. In one embodiment, an allocation module allocates a plurality of log logical volumes in a storage pool for storing copies of log instances. The log logical volumes may be hidden from a user. A log module records log data to at least one first log instance in a cache. A copy module transparently copies the at least one first log instance to a first log logical volume of a plurality of log logical volumes in a storage pool when a copy policy is satisfied. The log module further records the log data to at least one second log instance in the cache, overwriting the at least one first log instance. In one embodiment, a selection module selects a second log logical volume of the plurality of log logical volumes to receive the copied at least one second log instance if the first log logical volume satisfies a wrap policy.

    • An apparatus, system, and method is provided for flushing data from a cache to secondary storage. The apparatus, system, and method identifies predefined high priority cache structures and predefined low priority cache structures. The apparatus, system, and method selectively flushes low priority cache structures according to a first scheme when the cache is under a demand load and according to a second scheme when the cache is under substantially no demand load. The first scheme is defined to flush low priority cache structures as efficiently as possible and the second scheme is defined to flush low priority cache structures in a less efficient manner.
