摘要： Process intermediates are described herein having the generic structure: ##STR1## wherein X is selected from the group consisting of chloro, bromo and iodo; R.sub.3 is hydrogen or does not represent any group; wherein one of the wavy lines is a carbon-carbon double bond and the other of the wavy lines is a carbon-carbon single bond; with the proviso that when the .DELTA..sup.2,3 bond is a carbon-carbon double bond, then R.sub.3 is hydrogen and R.sub.3 and the moiety: ##STR2## are so juxtaposed that the molecule having the structure: ##STR3## exists in two different isomeric forms; a "+" form and "-" form.

The oxabicyclooctanes are useful in perfumery and foodstuff, medicinal product and tobacco flavors. The cyclohexenemethanols are useful as precursors for the oxabicyclooctanes and are, themselves, useful for their organoleptic properties in perfumery and flavors as are the esters of said cyclohexenemethanols.

摘要： Described is a process for augmenting or enhancing the aroma or taste of a smoking tobacco comprising the step of intimately admixing with a smoking tobacco, an aroma or taste augmenting or enhancing quantity of an oxabicyclo chemical compound having the structure: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.2 is C.sub.2 -C.sub.5 alkyl or alkenyl; R.sub.4 is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl; R.sub.7 is hydrogen or methyl; and R.sub.8 is hydrogen or methyl with the proviso that when R.sub.4 is methyl or ethyl R.sub.7 and R.sub.8 are not both hydrogen and that at least one of R.sub.7 and R.sub.8 is methyl.Also described is a smoking tobacco article comprising a cylindrical shaped mass of smoking tobacco encased in a wrapper, said wrapper and said smoking tobacco being in contact with a porous filter, and being in intimate contact with either said filter, said wrapper or said shaped tobacco mass, at least one oxabicyclo chemical compound having the structure: ##STR2## wherein R.sub.2 is C.sub.2 -C.sub.5 alkyl or alkenyl; R.sub.4 is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl; R.sub.7 is hydrogen or methyl with the proviso that when R.sub.4 is methyl or ethyl, R.sub.7 and R.sub.8 are not both hydrogen and that at least one of R.sub.7 and R.sub.8 is methyl.
