    • Random access coverage is assured while at the same time supporting high uplink data rates in a same service area served by a base station. A set of radio resources are shared by multiple mobile terminals for transmitting uplink to the base station including requests for access to service from the base station and transmissions for active connections with the base station. A first repeating time period and a second different repeating time period are defined. Uplink transmission grants are scheduled for active connections that permit use of a greater amount of the radio resources during the first repeating time period. Uplink transmission grants are also scheduled for active connections that permit use of a smaller amount of those resources during the second repeating time period. At least some random access requests to the base station are controlled to occur only during the second repeating time period.

    • A method and system are disclosed for making inter-cell handoffs to a cell of a base station including a directional antenna array. The handoff algorithm includes taking into account uplink direction of arrival measurements in at least one candidate target base station, made on signals from the mobile radio terminal to it's serving base station, and directly after handoff using a directional narrow lobe from the antenna array. The narrow lobe can be used immediately after the handoff in the radio base stations that have antenna arrays, by including the direction (of arrival information) to the mobile radio terminal in the handoff order to the target base station. Also disclosed are a method and system for measuring uplink interference on idle narrow lobe traffic channels, and using this information when selecting at handoff a target base station and traffic channel.

    • Handover is a main function that is used to support mobility in the network. In a cellular communication network having adaptive antennas for enabling narrow beam operation, it is assumed that a mobile unit is served by an active cell set (S1). A basic idea according to the present invention is to select, prior to establishment of a new serving radio link for a mobile unit, a narrow target beam within a neighbor area of the current active cell set of the mobile unit based on pre-established information of narrow beams within the neighbor area (S2), and to initiate establishment of the new serving radio link directly with the selected narrow target beam (S3). In this way, the narrow target beam can be selected at handover initiation and the new radio link can be established directly with a target narrow beam without first establishing the radio link with a cell-wide beam and then, after uplink measurements, reconfiguring the radio link onto a narrow beam.

    • A base station and method are described herein that vertically sweeps an antenna beam within a cell to improve the signal quality at scheduled times for a user terminal located within a coverage area of the cell. In one embodiment, the method improves a signal quality for a user terminal by: (a) vertically sweeping a beam within a cell coverage area to vary a signal quality at scheduled times for the user terminal located within the cell coverage area; and (b) performing one or more scheduling functions while taking into account variations in the vertical sweep of the antenna beam. For instance, the scheduling function(s) can include a link adaptation function, a resource allocation function, a user admittance/dropping function, a handover function, and/or a hybrid automatic repeat request function.
