    • A continuously variable transmission with synchronous shift includes an input, an output, a fixed-ratio drive mechanism and a variator in driven relationship with the input, a planetary gear assembly having a sun gear, a ring gear, a carrier, and a plurality of planet gears, a first clutch for engaging the variator selectively with the sun and ring gears, a second clutch for engaging the mechanism selectively with the carrier and sun gear and for disengaging the mechanism therefrom, and a third clutch for engaging the ring gear and carrier selectively with the output. This relationship provides the transmission with a plurality of drive ranges and the capability of shifting from any range to any other range at a synchronous shift point established when the variator ratio is equal to the ratio of the mechanism.

    • A controlled, variable displacement swash plate compressor is provided with means for controlling the capacity pivoting the swash plate about the drive shaft axis to vary the effective pumping capacity. The position of the swash plate with respect to the drive shaft axis is a function of the pressure maintained inside the crankcase, said position being a result of the various forces acting on the pistons, including the underside of the pistons where crankcase pressure is applied. A cam surface is provided to maintain a fixed top dead center position at all displacements, as well as an improved universal joint mechanism to anchor the swash plate against rotation.

    • A controllable, variable displacement swash plate compressor including a centrally pivoted swash plate on a rotating shaft. Control means are provided to increase or decrease the angle of inclination of the swash plate in response to changes in suction pressure. The delivery from the compressor may be reduced rapidly from the maximum as the angle of inclination is reduced, due partly to the reduction in stroke, but mainly to the increased clearance volume, i.e. the volume above the piston in the cylinder, and the consequent re-expansion of the trapped gas in the clearance volume. This achieves a more efficient method of reducing compressor output to match system requirements than suction gas throttling, a commonly used technique in automotive air conditioning applications. In addition, it does not require a clutch since it may be run for prolonged periods at or near zero capacity (no-stroke condition) when cooling is not required.
