    • A wireless system has a high rate data channel for time multiplexed communications to multiple mobile stations (MSs). Control channels include a forward link common power control channel and reverse link feedback channels for pilot, forward channel quality, and data acknowledgements from each MS. An MS can have an active state for data communications, for which these control channels are used at the full (time slot) rate, or a control hold state, in which acknowledgements are not needed and the others of these control channels can be shared among a plurality of MSs in the control hold state and each using a reduced rate such as ½, ¼, or ⅛ of the full rate. The arrangement can support an increased number of active MSs, facilitating an increased total throughput on the high rate data channel, without increasing system resources for the control channels.

    • A method and system for fractional frequency reuse in a communication network. A plurality of fractional frequency reuse modes for wireless communication are defined in which each of the modes are associated with a corresponding group of wireless communication tones assigned to one of a plurality of power levels. Communication with at least one mobile terminal in a first region is established using a fractional frequency reuse mode from the plurality of fractional frequency reuse modes. A coverage problem with communication with at least one of the mobile terminal in the first sector is detected. A base station associated with a second region is notified to change communication within the second region to a different fractional frequency reuse mode from the plurality of fractional frequency reuse modes.

    • A mobile terminal in a wireless communication network may be one of several modes of operation. When in an idle mode, the mobile terminal may avoid a lengthy random access procedure normally associated with responding to a page from a base station, if the base station includes in the page an indication of a resource that the mobile terminal may utilize when responding to the page. Additionally, the mobile terminal may transmit an efficient location update MAC header to a base station, whether prompted to by a page from the base station or not. Furthermore, without leaving the idle mode or a sleep mode, the mobile terminal may exchange short data burst messages with a base station.

    • The present invention provides for a scheduling scheme to be used with respect to a given mobile station. It is determined whether the given mobile station is or is not in soft-handoff. This is performed through examining a reduced active set. The reduced active set is based upon the active set, and the selection of the reduced active set includes considerations such as received reverse link channel signal strength. If the mobile station is in soft hand-off or with reduced active set size of greater than one, congestion control scheduling of reverse link communications from the given mobile station is utilized, using a data rate set by the congestion control of the reverse link channel. If the mobile station is not in soft-handoff or with reduced active set size of one, explicit scheduling of the reverse link communications from the given mobile station is utilized, using a data rate set by the explicit data rate control of the reverse link channel.
