    • A method and an apparatus are provided for automatically determining an area-related cell density of a cell structure of a honeycomb body having a plurality of passages that are open-ended at an end of the honeycomb body at which the cell structure is visible. An image which has a known or ascertainable image scale of at least a portion of the cell structure is recorded with an optical instrument and the image is processed. In the image processing operation the number of cells is established by counting cells and the cell density is calculated by relating the number of cells to a reference area established through the use of the image scale. The cell density can be rapidly and accurately determined in such a way particularly when using computer-aided image processing. Therefore, production errors can be quickly detected and costs can be saved in that manner.

    • A honeycomb body is produced in which metal sheets are stacked and/or wound in a layered configuration. The metal sheets are suitably structured so as to form passages through which a fluid can flow. At least a part of the sheet layers initially comprises a laminate material with a layer of chromium-containing steel and a layer primarily formed of aluminum. The laminate is substantially homogenized by diffusion to a stratified sheet in a subsequent heat treatment. The honeycomb body is assembled with at least a part of the sheet layers provided a structure which increases the degree of elasticity of the honeycomb body and/or the pressure in relation to surface area of the contact locations prior to and in the heat treatment. The honeycomb body is fitted into a tubular casing with such a prestressing that in the heat treatment the contact locations between the sheet layers remain in contact.

    • A process to produce a honeycomb body having a multiplicity of at least partially structured sheet metal layers forming a multiplicity of fluid-permeable passages. A fork-like intertwining device is rotatable about a central axis and engages each stack. A former surrounds the intertwining device and has an inner contour corresponding to an outer contour of the honeycomb body to be produced. At least one opening in a wall of the former for stack ends extends substantially parallel to the central axis. In a production of the honeycomb body, at least one stack is layered from a multiplicity of at least partially structured sheet metal layers. Each stack is introduced into a former corresponding to the external shape of the honeycomb body to be produced, with at least one end of each stack projecting out of the former through at least one opening. Each stack is held by an intertwining device rotatable about a central axis, in a central region. Each stack is intertwined by rotation of the intertwining device relative to the former to form a honeycomb body, with the stack ends being pulled into the former until the stacks fill the entire former.

    • A catalytic converter includes a casing tube having a given internal diameter. At least two individual honeycomb bodies through which a fluid can flow in a given flow direction, are disposed in the casing tube. The honeycomb bodies are formed of structured metal layers forming flow channels. The layers are joined to the casing tube by joining techniques, such as hard brazing. The honeycomb bodies have a given theoretical strain-free diameter and have an internal layout making the honeycomb bodies elastic and permitting the honeycomb bodies to be inserted into the casing tube with an elastic compression of from 2 to 10% of the given theoretical strain-free diameter and with prestress. A method for producing a catalytic converter includes forming at least two honeycomb bodies with a given theoretical strain-free diameter from structured metal layers defining channels through which a fluid can flow in a given direction. The honeycomb bodies are subsequently successively or simultaneously inserted with prestress from at least one side into a prefabricated casing tube having a given internal diameter. The honeycomb bodies are elastically compressed by from 2 to 10% of the given theoretical strain-free diameter and/or at least partial regions of the casing tube are subsequently plastically compressed by from 2 to 10% of the given internal diameter. The layers are joined to the casing tube.
