    • A rotary kiln is disclosed with a rotary firing hood mounted concentrically over the material discharge end of the kiln to rotate with the kiln. A main burner assembly projects axially through a neck formed by a rear wall of the hood and a plurality of burners project radially through the kiln shell. Fuel gas conducting tubes for supplying the kiln shell burners, are mounted on the outer periphery of the kiln shell and extend axially through the hood and rear wall thereof. The fuel tubes each have portions that project radially inward along an outer surface of the hood rear wall and axially away from the rear wall to an annular fuel gas manifold box mounted close around the hood rear wall neck. The annular manifold box has a pair of axially spaced radial walls connected to rotate with the rotary hood and a nonrotating outer sleeve connected to a stationary fuel gas delivery conduit. An annular air manifold box, similar in construction to the fuel gas manifold box, is mounted close around the axially extending portions of the fuel tubes and between the fuel gas manifold box and the rear wall of the firing hood. Air conducting tubes mounted on the kiln shell also extend axially through the rotary hood and rear wall thereof and have portions which project radially inward and axially away from the rear wall to the annular air manifold box. The kiln is provided with a pair of radial discharge ports, circumferentially spaced 180* apart, for discharging processed material twice each revolution of the kiln. The air and fuel gas tubes are arranged along the kiln shell in two groups, with each group of tubes being on one side of the kiln and between the pair of kiln discharge ports to be spaced away from hot processed material discharged through the ports.

    • A method and apparatus for reducing the alkali content of cement clinker is disclosed as improvements to a system according to U.S. Pat. No. 3,313,534. The improved system includes a mixing box mounted on top of a furnace structure that defines a preconditioning chamber and a preburning chamber over a traveling grate, with the preburn chamber adjacent a material inlet opening end of a rotary kiln. A portion of the hot gases coming from the kiln and passing into the preburn chamber are drawn into the mixing box where such gases are mixed with atmospheric air and bypassed away from the material in the preburn chamber while the remainder of the hot gas coming from the kiln is permitted to pass through the material in the preburn chamber. Withdrawing some of the gases from the preburn chamber unloads most of the dust and some of the volatilized alkalies from the system. This hot dust laden gas is mixed with atmospheric air in the mixing box to drop the temperature from about 2,000* Fahrenheit to below the freezing temperature of the alkalies, which for NaOH and KOH would be below 600* Fahrenheit. This immediate quenching of the gas in the mixing box freezes alkali to very small particles, most of which are smaller than 10 to 20 microns, that do not then deposit on inner surfaces of a bypass conduit or on material in the preconditioning chamber. The other gas flow, passing through the material in the preburn zone, transfers heat to the material therein and this gas drops in temperature to an average temperature of about 500* to 750* Fahrenheit. This gas that has passed through the material in the preburn chamber after tempering with atmospheric air if necessary to lower the temperature to 500-600* Fahrenheit and the gas that has bypassed the preburn chamber may then be directed through one or more cyclone dust collectors to remove the dust particles larger than 10 to 20 microns and a minor portion of the frozen alkalies and then delivered to a preconditioning chamber in which the material is treated (i.e., dried) before passing into the preburn chamber. One or more auxiliary burners are mounted in the top of the furnace structure between the mixing box and the preconditioning chamber, to make up any heat deficit in preburn gases. Bypassed gases and preburn gases with entrained dust and alkali particles smaller than 10 to 20 microns are delivered to the preconditioning chamber and drawn through the material and into exhaust conduit means connected to the preconditioning chamber between the preburn chamber and the material inlet end of the preconditioning chamber. Provision is made for withdrawing controlled amounts of the bypassed gas directly to the exhaust conduit means, without such amounts passing through the material in the preconditioning chamber. A fine dust collector, which may be an electrostatic precipitator or gas permeable bags, is connected to the exhaust conduit means. The fine dust collector collects dust smaller than 10 to 20 microns, including a major portion of the alkalies.

    • A rotary inductor has an annular stator with angularly displaced radial teeth, an energizing winding having turns encircling individual teeth to induce magnetic fluxes therein, an output winding having turns encircling individual teeth preferably displaced 180 electrical degrees apart connected in subtractive relation to cancel the base component of the magnetic flux, and a ferromagnetic rotor rotatable within the stator to cyclically modulate the permeances of the flux paths extending through the teeth and across the airgap into the rotor and thus cyclically vary the magnitude of the magnetic flux linking the turns of the energizing and output windings encircling each tooth. The preferred embodiment is a three-phase vector adder and has two energizing windings having turns surrounding sets of first and second teeth displaced 90 electrical degrees, threephase output winding each of which has turns surrounding individual first teeth and second teeth, the three-phase output windings surrounding teeth displaced 120 electrical degrees on the stator, and the rotor being contoured so that the permeances of the magnetic flux paths through the teeth and across the airgap into the rotor vary substantially sinusoidally.

    • A fail-safe monitoring device for a self-propelled combine harvester has a plurality of signal lights mounted in the operator''s platform in the field of view of the operator and a plurality of pairs of electrical contacts each of which is connected in series with one of the signal lights across the battery of the harvester. The pairs of contacts are controlled by displaceable members of the harvester such as a straw walker door, a concave, and a parking brake and are held closed to light the signal lights when the harvester is functioning normally. All of the signal lights connected with the pairs of contacts are of the same color and intensity. The normally closed contacts and normally lit lights are fail-safe since any wiring error or burned out lamp cannot be mistaken as a normal operating condition. If a malfunction occurs in the harvester, one of the displaceable members is moved and opens the associated pair of contacts and extinguishes the corresponding signal light. Oscillator means are provided for flashing a signal light of another color on and off in response to the opening of any one of the pairs of contacts, and such oscillator means are preferably astable multivibrator means having a NOR gate input stage with a plurality of resistance input branches each of which is connected to one of said pairs of contacts.

    • An end liner assembly for a rotary mill or the like in which the wear plates or liner members at the feed end, or the grates and wear plates at the discharge end, are assembled in a plurality of radially compressed pyramided tiers in stacked relation to each other. The radially outer end of the pyramided tiers is supported on the shell plate of the mill or on a filler ring supported thereby. The radially inner end of the pyramided tiers is engaged by a grinding pad(s) carried by a ''''pinned'''' liner member(s) or carried by another member(s) fixed with respect to the rotary mill, such as the discharge cone at the discharge end of the mill. The grinding pads are precisely dimensioned to provide the proper radial compression on the pyramided tiers of liner members. A supplemental clamping action on the liner assembly is provided by the lifter bars which are positioned between contiguous circumferentially spaced liner members in partially overlying clamping relation thereto. As an alternative to the use of grinding pads on the pinned liner of other stationary member, a wedge may be inserted in the clearance space between the radially inner end of the pyramided tiers of liner members and the contiguous radially outer edge of the pinned liner or other stationary member.
