    • An airbelt inflator (10) is provided for supplying and directing gas from the combustion of pyrotechnic materials into an inflatable safety belt or airbag. The airbelt inflator (10) includes a substantially cylindrical body (12). One or more ledges (26, 42) are defined by the junctions of inner walls (34, 36, and 38) wherein each ledge (26, 42) functions to retain an inner inflator component. In another aspect of the invention, an enhancer disc (56) features a metallic density greater than an associated filter (48) whereby tailoring of the density of the metallic disc (56) facilitates a quick and easy method of modifying the gas flow exiting the inflator (10).

    • A diagnostic method (100) with pre-assembly fault recording lock-out inhibits fault recording during assembly of a main system until the system has been determined operation at least once (116). The method will still note the detection of system failures/errors (112) by activating a warning lamp (120), but will not record these faults into memory until the system has determined that the main system has been powered up without any errors at least once (118 and 122). Thus, since these faults are not stored in memory during manufacture/assembly, the method of the present invention obviates the need for any additional assembly step(s) of erasing and/or clearing the memory, or externally controlled recording inputs for the diagnostic system.

    • A hydrostatic weight sensor comprises one or more fluid containing bladders in fluid communication with one another and with a pressure sensor, each constructed from a plurality of sheets of semi-rigid material sealably connected at the periphery thereof so as to form one or more enclosed volumes, and filled with a fluid so as to cause deformation of the bladder faces. The hydrostatic weight sensor is located within the seat, and the pressure of the fluid contained therein is responsive to the applied load. In another embodiment, a plurality of sheets of semi-rigid material are sealed at a periphery and are secured to one another at a plurality of locations within the periphery so as to create a plurality of fluid containing zones which can hinge with respect to one another. The sensing fluid is either a liquid, a Bingham plastic, or a thixotropic material.
