    • A journal foil bearing comprising a retaining member having an inner surface which defines a shaft opening within which a rotatable shaft is receivable for rotation; and a foil assembly affixed to and lining the inner surface and comprising a plurality of foil sub-assemblies each subtending a circumferential segment, of the inner surface. Each of the foil sub-assemblies may comprise an under foil sandwiched between a spring foil disposed radially outwardly of the under foil, and a top foil disposed radially inwardly of the under foil, the under foil, the top foil, and the spring foil each having a leading edge distal from a trailing edge in a direction of rotation of the rotatable shaft, and each of the under foil, the top foil, and the spring foil being affixed to the retaining member along their respective leading edge, their respective trailing edge, or both their respective leading edge and their respective trailing edge, wherein a radius of curvature of the top foil is less than a radius of curvature of the under foil. A method of supporting a rotating shaft is also disclosed.

    • A marine vessel propulsion assembly has an elastically suspended gearbox with an output drive shaft guided in an axial bearing with a rigidly suspended bearing housing. Free space is provided in the axial bearing for allowing movement of the output drive shaft in the radial direction, wherein the output drive shaft is freely movable radially within the free space. A supporting ring with sliding elements for axial guidance of the output drive shaft is arranged in the axial bearing. The supporting ring is hydraulically supported by a large number of pistons so that the supporting ring can match itself to angular displacements of the output drive shaft and can always completely and uniformly support the sliding elements on the bearing circumference.

    • A compliant hydrodynamic fluid film journal bearing for handling high loads. The bearing assembly includes a first thin smooth compliant sheet for facing a shaft, one or more corrugated foils, and a second sheet between the foils and the compliant sheet for supportedly underlying the compliant sheet for preventing sagging of the first sheet between ridges of the foils. A foil element is anchored at a position intermediate its ends to the bearing sleeve whereby both ends thereof are unanchored. A pair of radially outer and inner corrugated foils have outer foil ridges which underlie some inner foil ridges and outer foil furrows which underlie others of the inner foil ridges. A bearing assembly includes a plurality of rows of corrugated foil elements wherein ends of foil elements are offset circumferentially from ends of foil elements in adjacent rows symmetrically from the radial centerplane to provide a herringbone pattern effect. At least some ridges on at least one of inner and outer corrugated foils have truncated apex portions.
