The method involves the steps of preparing a selected internal surface of a high melting point metal tubing for sealing to a glass tubing; inserting a portion of the glass tubing into the prepared portion of the metal tubing, the glass tubing having an outer diameter substantially the same as the inner diameter of the metal tubing; sealing the inserted glass tubing to the internal surface of the metal tubing; drawing the glass tubing under a magnifying device to reduce the entire interior diameter thereof to substantially two microns; and breaking away an end portion of the drawn glass tubing.

The resulting connections can not only support a mechanical load, but also are resistant to high temperatures. 摘要： Glass or ceramic-to-metal composites or seals wherein the glass or ceramic is bonded to a copper base alloy having a thin film of Al2O3 on its surface. The Al2O3 film comprises at least 10 percent, up to 100 percent, of the oxide film thickness on the metal. The copper base alloy preferably contains 2 to 10 percent aluminum with C.D.A. Alloy 638 being the most preferred alloy. The invention also includes the process of bonding the glasses or ceramics to the metal. Substantial mismatch between the coefficient of thermal expansion of the glasses or ceramics and the copper base alloys may be tolerated in accordance with this invention.

摘要： A refractory metal hollow cap has a forward end of its interior frustoconical enlarging toward said end which is feather edged to foil thickness with the added assistance of inward tapering of the exterior surface of the cap in approach to said end, the interior hollow conical portion of the cap receives a correspondingly tapered end margin of a vitreous capillary tube; a rod extends from outside of the lamp axially through the refractory cap and the vitreous capillary tube, and where it passes through the stem or more solid end of the cap it is sealed thereto by fusion or welding; the conical end margin of the vitreous capillary tube substantially fills the conical hollow portion of the cap; the seal is completed by collapsing a juxtaposed area of a vitreous envelope in tight sealing engagement against the outside tapering surface of the cap thus including the feather edge within vitreous material both inside and outside with extensive sealing surface.
