    • A new air cushion support system for air cushion vehicles is composed of a plurality of annular peripheral jet units or modules distributed in an array in a common plane. Each peripheral jet module develops a separate air cushion or air bubble under the module to provide a plurality of independent air cushions under a vehicle. Each peripheral jet module or unit is a spring-loaded pressurized air valve with a control piston at the center of the valve spring biased to respond to back pressure variation of the air bubble or air cushion developed beneath the module caused by variations in terrain over which a vehicle is traveling. Each module or valve is formed by a pod defined by an inwardly sloping peripheral outer wall or pod skirt for directing pressurized air inwardly and downwardly toward the pod. Each module further includes a valve head, piston or pit seating within the pod skirt. The pit is formed with an inwardly sloping outer peripheral wall seated within the pod with the pit wall spaced from the pod skirt. The pod skirt and pit wall define the annular peripheral air jet channel of the module for developing a pressurized air bubble or air cushion. Each pit is movably mounted and spring loaded relative to the pod for independent motion of the pit vertically up and down within the pod for varying volume rate of flow of air expelled in the air curtain in response to variations in back pressure under the module during travel over varying terrain.

    • An air cushion vehicle comprises a structure to be lifted, a central lifting cushion, and a peripheral lifting arrangement constituted by a plurality of cells defined externally by an outer multi-lobed skirt.Each lobe of the outer skirt is constituted by an assembly of an upper part defined by a surface of revolution which diverges downwards with respect to the structure, and of a lower part defined by a surface of revolution which converges downwards with respect to the structure, so that the lobe projects outside the structure. The lifting surface of the cells and thus of the entire cushion is increased and they project externally of the structure thus protecting the structure against impact.

    • A sidewall gas-cushion vehicle is provided with a flexible skirt of hollow inflatable form, which, in operation of the vehicle, depends from the vehicle body so that the bottom of the skirt defines a convex face in close proximity to the surface over which the vehicle travels so as to form a plenum gap through which an atmosphere-seeking flow of cushion gas escapes. The flexible skirt is of two-stage form, comprising an upper compartment and a lower compartment. A fan, an aperture in a compartment-dividing membrane and an outlet duct are provided for inflating the lower compartment to a higher pressure than that existing in the upper compartment.

    • A fluid bearing having improved operating characteristics. The platform to which the bearing is attached and which supports any load includes the necessary conduits for supply of fluid under pressure as well as the necessary structural integrity to support the expected load. The conduits are, with respect to the bearing and the plenum area of the bearing, in a particular, predetermined relative location. When the bearing is in a deflated condition and fluid under pressure is introduced, the initial fluid flows into the bearing and the plenum at a predetermined rate. The deflated bearing structure restricts fluid flow into the plenum until after the bearing is substantially inflated. The controlled flow to the bearing and the plenum allows a substantial pressure differential between the interior of the bearing and the plenum. Upon reaching inflation, fluid under pressure can freely flow into the bearing, into the plenum and between the plenum and the interior of the bearing.
