    • A method and means for compensating for lateral registration errors in printing machines of the type having a plurality of image processing stations for forming a composite image on an imageable surface which moves relative to the stations. The invention includes monitoring means for determining the angular displacement of the surface from a reference in the process direction to thereby determine the lateral registration error at each of the image processing stations. Actuating means are provided to move the image processing stations laterally relative to the surface to provide lateral registration of the images formed on the surface. The invention may also include means for compensating for process direction registration errors including monitoring means for determining the angular displacement of the surface from a reference in lateral direction at each of the image processing stations and providing means to rotate the image processing stations relative to the surface to provide process direction registration of the images formed on the surface.

    • To provide a clean operator side (I) of a printing machine, the circumferential and lateral register adjustment of a plate cylinder (20) is located on the machine or drive side (II) of the machine and is formed by a special gearing arrangement; a first gear (12) which is rotatable on an axially shiftable stub shaft (19) of the plate cylinder by being positioned on a bearing thereof, is driven from a second gear (9) which may also drive an offset blanket cylinder (18). The first gear is in meshing engagement with a dual gear, having third and fourth gearings (16, 15), the first, second and third gears being spiral or inclined, and the fourth gear (15), which meshes with an axial fixed fifth gear (13) splined to the shaft fo the cylinder (19), is likewise formed with axial teeth. The combined third and fourth gears can be shifted axially, thus causing rotation of the fourth gear by the "thread" type engagement of the third gear with the first gear, which rotation is transferred to the fifth gear and hence to the plate cylinder; in addition, the axial position of the plate cylinder is independently adjustable by a spindle (29) moving the stub shaft without transmitting rotation thereto or receiving rotation therefrom.

    • The position of a drive shaft of a printing press is regulated during acceleration of the printing press. A position regulator includes a first integrator and a second integrator connected in tandem with the first integrator. The first integrator provides an output signal corresponding to the integral of the difference between a first position signal indicative of the desired position of the drive shaft and a second position signal indicative of the actual position of the drive shaft. The second integrator responds to the output signal from the first integrator to provide a control signal. A control asrrangement responds to the control signal from the second integrator to accelerate the drive shaft. During acceleration of the drive shaft, the difference between the first and second position signals is driven to a value of zero.

    • Method and apparatus for synchronously controlling a printing speed of a belt-type printing machine including a plate cylinder, a tension roll for adjusting a distance between the plate cylinder and the tension roll, and an endless printing belt detachably wound around the plate cylinder and the tension roll. According to the present invention, sprocket wheels each having thereround sprocket pins for engaging perforations of the endless printing belt are rotatably mounted on the plate cylinder so that the sprocket wheels have no function of driving the endless printing belt and are only intended to guide the belt along a predetermined path and prevent it from lateral movement relative to the plate cylinder. The endless printing belt is driven only by a frictional force between the peripheral surface of the plate cylinder and the belt. With independently detecting the number of rotation of the sprocket wheels, i.e. the travelling speed of the endless printing belt and the rotational speed of the plate cylinder, i.e. the reference speed of the printing machine, an error between these speeds, if any, is corrected to synchronously equalize these speeds by a differential gear unit to which main drive for driving the plate cylinder and sub-drive for correcting the error are inputted.
