    • This invention relates to a system and method for placing event related information into a video broadcasting so that the added information does not interfere with or obscure the primary action of interest in the broadcast. The disclosed information could be implemented by using instructions from an event information gathering system to trigger the display of one of an appropriate set of pre-rendered animations in the broadcast video via a well known live video insertion system (48). The disclosed invention envisages the animation sequence having at least two parts (FIG. 4), namely a core or base sequence (34) which is always used, and a mid or a variable sequence (56, 58, 60) which is changed according to the actual data that needs to be displayed. The live video insertion system data (48) and processing may be used to perform occlusion, and/or tracking to either make the event information display look as if it is part of the scene, or merely to occlude the display when event action would otherwise be obscured, or to turn off or reposition, or resize the display when event action otherwise be obscured.

    • A camera system switches electronically between infrared radiation sensing and visible light sensing depending on ambient conditions, to optimize visible picture quality for surveillance. An electronic CCD camera has an optical bandpass filter having a stop band between the infrared radiation spectrum and the visible light spectrum to provide high quality visible light images when not in the infrared mode and high quality mono infrared images when not in visible light mode. A control circuit compares the camera signal with a photocell signal and controls the camera's sensing mode and an if illuminator's operation in accordance with the ambient conditions.

    • A video signal mixer with a parabolic signal mixing function, especially useful in scene-by-scene color correction systems and “blue screen” video masking applications. The mixer effects mixing two independent signal sources while smoothly controlling the rate of change during mixing. An input stage receives a first video signal and a second video signal. The mixing circuit mixes the first video signal with the second video signal based on a predetermined parabolic function. An aperture signal circuit in the mixer allows a degree of operator control over the parabolic function. An output stage provides a parabolized output signal. The output signal, which comprises the mixture of the first video signal and the second video signal, eliminates discontinuities in regions of the signal which would otherwise produce discontinuities in prior art types of video signal mixers.

    • A method for the digital manipulation of a video image, in which an object is located and replaced by another object. To account for ambient lighting effects, a base set of appearance parameter values for the first object is determined, such as average values of hue, saturation and luminance. Selected regions of the object are analysed and in respect of each selected region the extent to which actual appearance parameter values deviate from the base set of apparatus parameter values is determined. The method includes storing data representation of the positions of the regions and the respective deviations from the base set of values. The first object is replaced by a second object, and the method then includes the step of applying to regions of the second object adjustments to appearance parameter values by reference to the stored data.
