    • Disclosed are various embodiments of circuitry and methods for generating interpolated signals in an optical encoder. The optical encoder configurations and circuitry disclosed herein permit very high resolution reflective optical encoders in small packages to be provided. Methods of making and using such optical encoders are also disclosed. According to one embodiment, the interpolated signals are generated through the use of signal generation circuitry, peak voltage generation circuitry, reference voltage generation circuitry, slope detection circuitry, and a clocked comparator that is configured to output interpolated output pulses.

    • An apparatus for photon counting is disclosed that comprises a sensor element (5) comprising a photon detector (8) and a capacitance (2) for applying a potential difference across the detector (8). The apparatus also comprises switching circuitry (6) for connecting the sensor element (5) operatively to a voltage source (4) during a refresh period to charge the capacitance (2) to achieve a predetermined potential difference across the detector (8) above a threshold value, and for substantially isolating the sensor element (5) from the voltage source (4) during a sensing period in which the charged capacitance (2) maintains a potential difference across the detector (8) above the threshold value and in which the detection of a photon by the detector (8) causes at least some of the charge on the capacitance (2) to discharge through the detector (8). The apparatus also comprises control circuitry (12) for controlling the switching circuitry (6) to initiate refresh and sensing periods in alternating sequence. In one aspect, the control circuitry (12) is adapted to control the switching circuitry (6) to initiate successive refresh periods at predetermined intervals.

    • A system and method for minimizing non-linearity errors induced in output drive voltage of a transmitter circuit due to on-chip process, voltage, and temperature (PVT) variations. The system including an oscillator for converting an input reference bias voltage into a clock output signal, where the input reference bias voltage varies in response to PVT variations. Also included is a counter for counting the clock output signal and generating a count value corresponding to the clock output of the oscillator. A comparison module operatively coupled to the counter compares the count value with a pre-simulated count value to generate an error signal. Based on the error signal generated by the comparison module, a correction logic adjusts an output drive signal of the transmitter circuit making it immune to PVT variations.

    • A single photon detection system and method are disclosed which have a control block for helping to monitor and optimize performance, especially at high detection rates. The system is based on photon detectors constructed with avalanche photodiodes (APD) gated in time to operate in the Geiger mode. An electrical reference frequency is generated which is subtracted from the APD output in order to better isolate the breakdown event. The resulting signal is sampled and analyzed to allow the control unit to optimize the magnitude and phase of the electrical reference frequency. The control unit may also change the gate pulse shape and phase, including by the use of a digital-to-analog converter. The gate pulse can be shifted off an input optical pulse so as to estimate dark count rate, or shifted to measure a reference input signal to estimate detection efficiency.

    • A resolution switch circuit for an image sensor uses a control unit to control a plurality of image gathering units to generate and store image signals. A resolution control unit controls a plurality of shift registers through the resolution control signals so that the shift registers control the image gathering units to output image signals. The signal combining unit is used to combine the image signals output from the image gathering units to achieve resolution change. Since the resolution switch circuit for the image sensor according to invention does not require additional resolution switch wiring, the affect of noise can be avoided and cost of the circuits can be reduced. The transmission of the image signals in the form of charges prevents any signal distortion due to resistance of wiring during transmission.
