    • A gas-pressurized electrical switch includes a casing provided with a transverse wall dividing the interior into two quenching chambers filled with a pressurized arc-quenching gas. A longitudinally movable contact member is supported within a first one of the chambers and includes a nozzle pipe projecting through the transverse wall into the other chamber for entry into an annular stationary contact member which is surrounded by a magnetic-field producing coil having one end connected to one terminal of the switch. The nozzle pipe is provided with apertures through the wall thereof in the first chamber which place the two chambers in communication with each other. A pin member is located centrally within the stationary contact member and is entered into the nozzle pipe in the contact-closed position, and this pin is surrounded by an annular electrode. When the contacts disengage, an arc is drawn and thereafter one portion of the arc burns between the annular electrode and the pin and is rotated by the magnetic field, and the other portion of the arc burns between the pin and the nozzle pipe of the movable contact member. Burning of the arc generates heat which causes an increase in gas pressure in the chamber containing the stationary contact member assembly which then acts to start flow of arc extinguishing gas through the nozzle pipe which results in arc extinction.

    • A contact arrangement is disclosed for a compressed-gas circuit breaker wherein the compressed gas is blown through the arc. The contact arrangement includes two contact pieces arranged on a common axis and having respective end faces mutually adjacent to conjointly define a gas therebetween. A switching member is movable between the open and closed positions to electrically join the contact pieces in the closed position and to electrically separate the contact pieces in the open position whereby an arc is drawn when the gap is opened. Each of the contact pieces has a hollow interior for accommodating the discharge of the gas blown through the arc and has an inner inlet surface defining an opening to the hollow interior. The inlet surface extends from the end face into the hollow interior. Each one of the contact pieces has a plurality of even grooves formed in the end face and the inlet surface thereof. Each of these grooves is skew at every increment thereof with respect to the common axis and extends tangentially into the opening at the inlet surface.

    • An apparatus for making and breaking an electrical underwater connection between releasable first and second members of an underwater connector by providing a fixed electrical contact on the first member and a movable electrical contact on the second member with means for moving the movable contact into and out of engagement with the fixed contact and penetratable sealing means on each of the members protecting the electrical contacts from water but allowing passage of the movable contacts into and out of engagement with the fixed contact. Piston and cylinder means on the second member for carrying the movable contact for making and breaking the electrical connection. A fluid bypass between both ends of the piston for allowing bypass of a flowable nonwater soluble insulating compound between the male and female members as the piston is reciprocated.
