    • Refrigeration apparatus and method generally include a compressor for compressing refrigerant gas to a liquid, an evaporator for evaporating refrigerant liquid to refrigerant gas and cooling in atmosphere adjacent the evaporator and a condenser for rejecting the heat of compression of hot refrigerant vapor to the atmosphere adjacent to the condenser. First and second chambers are provided separated by free-floating piston for alternately condensing refrigerant gas in the first chamber and storing refrigerant livid in the second chamber, and condensing refrigerant gas in the second chamber and storing refrigerant livid in the first chamber. Lines interconnecting the compressor, evaporator, condenser and the first and second chambers of the gas piston cylinder enable the compressor to alternately introduce refrigerant gas into the first chamber and move refrigerant livid into the evaporative means by displacement of the free-floating piston and introduce refrigerant gas into the second chamber and move refrigerant liquid into the evaporator by first displacement of the free-floating piston.

    • A broad range cooling system is provided which can operate over a temperature range of -25.degree. F. to 75.degree. F. under any expected ambient temperatures. The system includes two compressor systems which are configurable to operate independently and as a cascade system to provide multiple cooling temperatures for multiple loads each having a particular temperature requirement. There are multiple evaporator systems for cooling air which is used to cool the product; one evaporator system for each desired temperature. Each evaporator system is provided a thermal expansion valve, a corresponding thermostatic bulb and a thermostat to control the temperature in a corresponding chamber. The container is partitioned into chambers, each chamber having an evaporator system so that each evaporator system provides positive temperature control within its chamber. An evaporator pressure regulator is provided to manitain the evaporator pressure higher and thereby allow the several evaporators to maintain different pressures. The cascade cooling mode utilizing both compressors provides additional cooling capability for allowing even more temperature selectivity below 0.degree. F.

    • A refrigeration system of the type having an economizer cycle is provided with a null cycle, in addition to heating and cooling cycles, without shutting a compressor prime mover down, to preserve air flow in a conditioned space. First, second and third controllable valves respectively: (1) select main and auxiliary condensers, (2) open and close a liquid line, and (3) open and close a line which provides a warm liquid to an economizer heat exchanger. The valves are controlled in at least one predetermined open/close pattern during a null cycle, and preferably in a plurality of selectable predetermined open/close patterns, to provide a null cycle at any instant which substantially matches the net heat gain or loss taking place in the conditioned space. Thus, the temperature of the served space will be more apt to remain in a null temperature range close to set point, providing smoother and more accurate control over the temperature of the conditioned space for longer shelf life of perishables stored therein. The system achieves the latter by controlling a bypass value according to the load of the compressor.

    • The invention relates to a refrigeration system for use in motor-cars equipped with an air-conditioning system. The refrigeration system comprises a metal cooling mantle through which a cold refrigerant is circulated, the size of the mantle being such as to closely fit a standard beverage can or bottle. Preferably, the mantle has a gap along one of its sides parallel to the axis, so that when there is circulated a refrigerant through the said mantle, the gap narrows or closes, thus establishing contact between the inner surface of the mantle and the beverage container. The cooling is rapid and takes up only a small part of the cooling capacity of the air-conditioning system.
