    • A package for retaining material wound in a figure-8 configuration and including a radial hole extending from the central core space thereof to the outer periphery thereof is enclosed in a container having a preforated corner portion for feeding material from the winding. The winding is placed within a polygonally-sided insert having opposing sides engaging the outer periphery of the winding and including a feedout tube inserted in the radial hole for feeding the inner end of the material. Opposite sides of the insert engage the inner surfaces of the container with the feedout tube being aligned with the perforated corner portion. The bottom and upper surfaces of the container include intersecting cone sections for supporting the inner windings of the material.

    • For guiding flexible material wound in a figure-8 package with inner end feedout, a coil is enclosed in a container with walls of corrugated cardboard. The payout of the material is guided by a tube having a flange adjacent the outer end, and two outwardly extending projections between the flange and the outer end, leaving a space therebetween. The inner edges of the projections are slanted in opposite directions. The tube is inserted into a coil, which is then inserted into a container formed of corrugated material. The corrugated material has an opening equal in diameter to the diameter of the tube and notches on either side of such opening extending in the direction of the corrugations. The outer end of the tube is brought through this opening, with the projections extending through the notches, and is then turned by 90.degree.. The thickness of the cardboard is slightly less than the space between the projections and the flange. Turning the tube causes the notches to ride up on the wall and to dig into it, so as to prevent accidental turning of the tube to an unlocked position. The projections rest against uninterrupted corrugations in the wall of the container.

    • An assembly for packaging a coil of wire or other strand material. At least one dispensing strip embraces the outer surface of the coil generally diametrically and across its traversed portion and includes a pair of pyramid-shaped members which project into the central core of the coil from opposite directions. Wire from the core of the coil is drawn through a hollow feed tube which extends radially through the windings of the coil. For support and protection of the coil, a container is provided and includes a window positioned for withdrawal of the wire from the coil. By reason of its construction or, alternatively, by its composition of appropriate transparent material, the container enables an inspection of its contents.

    • Standard baler machines use a plurality of wires to tie the bales. Each wire is fed from a coil which is transported from the wire works in a paperboard carton which is rectangular in shape and appropriately scored on either of its two broad sides to enable the centers of the sides to be removed in circular cutouts. The lead end of the coil of wire is drawn out of one cutout and threaded through appropriate guides to the tie mechanism. The tail end of the coil is usually drawn out of the opposite cut-out and spliced to the lead end of a second coil in a second carton. The two cartons are usually installed back to back in a rack on the baler with a space between the adjacent broad sides. In accordance with the present invention, each carton is scored or otherwise weakened from the top of one cut-out, over the top of the carton to the top of the opposite cut-out. Thus, when the coil has been fed out of the first carton, the top is conveniently laid open, the first carton removed from the wire, the second carton moved on the rack to the place of the former first carton, another carton placed in the rack behind the second, and the tail end of the second coil spliced to the lead end of the third.
