    • Expanded structures are formed by cutting a series of concentric rings or sections from a single block or sheet of solid material. The "rings" need not be circular, but may be any regular or irregular geometric or other shape as desired, so long as they are substantially concentric with one another. The cuts are made so that they angle outwardly from the upper to the lower surface of the block or sheet, and pass completely through the sheet or block. This provides a series of concentric sections, with each section having a lower, outer periphery which is at least slightly larger than the upper, inner periphery of the next larger adjacent section. This allows each section to be stacked atop a larger adjacent section, with the lower outer edge surface of each smaller section resting upon the upper inner edge surface of the larger section immediately therebelow. Alternatively, the tapered outer and inner walls or faces of adjacent sections may be wedged together, with an adjacent inner section protruding somewhat from the plane of its adjacent outer section. Such structures may be formed in virtually any practicable size, from utility sheds including door and window openings formed therein, to smaller household containers, works of art, etc. as desired. The structures may be made permanent by coating with a suitable material (e.g., glass fiber and resin, etc.) if so desired. Different colors of materials may also be assembled together, to produce structures having alternating bands of colors therein.

    • A fiber placement head movable with respect to a surface, for placing fiber tows thereon, including a feed assembly for feeding the tows to a front end of the feed assembly where the feed assembly includes first and second sets of feed tow guides, an applicator assembly at the front end to receive the tows and apply such to the surface where the applicator assembly includes first and second sets of applicator tow guides, and a device for rotating the applicator assembly relative to the feed assembly between first and second positions. In the first position, the first set of applicator guides is aligned with the first set of feed guides, and in the second position, the first set of applicator guides is aligned with the second set of feed guides. The head moves relative to the surface in a first direction when the applicator assembly is in the first position and then moves in a second direction when the applicator assembly is in the second position, to apply the tows, where the first and second directions are generally opposite each other. The head further includes a heater having an outlet near the front end and a manifold to receive hot air from the heater and distribute such to the surface. The manifold includes first and second inlets to receive the air where the first inlet is aligned with the heater in the first position, and the second inlet is aligned with the heater in the second position.

    • The invention concerns a device and method for applying temporary tattoos. The device is a pocket enclosing a dye. The outer layers of the pocket are impermeable to the dye. The pocket has a removable bottom layer. When the bottom layer is removed, the now exposed inner layer of the pocket, which has dye-permeable and dye-impermeable portions, is adhered to an appropriate location of a user's skin. The user's skin is then exposed to the dye and a tattoo will form in a pattern corresponding to portions of the inner layer (or layers) permeable to the dye. Using the method, a user may cut out and remove a pattern from a dye-impermeable layer of material. The layer is adhered to an appropriate location of a user's skin. The user applies the dye over the layer. The user then securely adheres a dye-impermeable backing layer to the layer of material, thereby preventing leakage of the dye between the layer of material and the backing layer.

    • Simulated decorative architectural columns comprising an axial member and a jacket surrounding the axial member. The jacket is comprised of a plurality of elongated rigid foam material members of truncated wedge-shaped cross-section, or jacket wedges. After the jacket is assembled around the axial member the outer surface of the jacket is sanded to provide a smooth surface, and the smooth surface is provided with an overcoating resembling a cut surface of stone. Groups of jacket wedges are fabricated from corresponding blanks by means of a hot-wire foam cutting machine. Each blank is first subdivided into a lower portion and an upper portion by a parting surface the profile of which is substantially identical to the intended profile of the finished column. The lower or relievo portion of the blank is then subdivided into a plurality of wedge members by a series of oblique cuts each extending from end to end of the lower portion of the blank.

    • A centerpiece assembly in which an array of floral-like elements is supported on a rack to simulate a bouquet of cut flowers. Each element in the array has a stem formed by a transparent tubular wand filled with pellets of candy whose color imparts color to the stem. The lower end of the wand is provided with a removable stopper, the upper end having a decorative flower-like pom-pom attached thereto. The rack, fabricated of transparent material, is composed of a base plate having a center post anchored thereon on which are supported at least two tier plates, one above the other, each tier having a ring of equi-spaced holes therein coaxial with the center post. The upper tier ring has a diameter greater than that of the lower tier ring, whereby each hole in the upper ring is spaced a greater distance from the post than the corresponding hole in the lower ring. The wand of each floral-like element is inserted into a respective hole in the upper ring and the corresponding hole in the lower ring, with its lower end resting on the base, whereby the elements of the array are outwardly inclined and converge at the base to simulate a bouquet of cut flowers.

    • A system for manufacturing a banner consisting of an elongated flexible strip upon which indicia is located wherein the indicia is formed by computer-controlled apparatus. A masking material is directly laminated to the banner face and, preferably, the lateral edge regions of the banner are provided with drive and orientation holes cooperating with drive structure of a computer-controlled cutting machine through which the laminated banner and mask are fed. The computer-controlled cutter slits only the masking material to define the desired indicia and the unwanted portions of the masking material are then peeled from the banner face. The remaining masking material may form the indicia itself, but in the preferred embodiment, the exposed banner face is coated, as with paint, and after drying, the remaining masking material is removed from the banner face to produce a long-lasting banner having painted indicia defined thereon.
