    • The liquid-distributing roller assembly for printing machines is composed of two opposite pairs of guiding tracks secured to the machine walls. One track supports for rectilinear movement a two-stage transmission gear unit in which one end of the shaft is supported for rotation; the other end of the shaft is supported for rotation and for a rectilinear movement in the opposite track. The shaft supports for rotation and for an axial displacement a liquid distributing roller which at one end is connected to a first spur gear rotatable on one end of the shaft and being in permanent engagement with an elongated transmission gear. The latter is also in permanent engagement with a second spur gear which is connected for joint rotation to the shaft. The other end of the shaft supports a cam which engages a cam follower connected to the distributing roller so that as soon as the latter is rotated an axial reciprocating movement is generated by the cam mechanism.

    • An inking system for a printing plate having a printing density which varies arbitrarily from the leading end of the plate to the trailing end including a source of ink film, rollers arranged in series between the source and the plate cylinder, the last roller in the series being a form roller in contact with the plate, with at least one of the rollers being a vibrated roller. Thrusting means are provided for imparting reciprocating movement to the vibrated roller. Means are provided for establishing a succession of sources of control signal at different levels tailored to the printing density of the plate at corresponding points about the periphery. A reference member coupled to the plate cylinder commutates the sources to produce a phased control signal which varies with ink need about the periphery of the plate. The control signal is utilized to vary the instantaneous velocity of the thrusting means inversely with the printing density of the plate so that ink is deposited on successive peripheral portions of the plate in a thickness tailored to need. In a preferred form of the invention a control board is used to set up the succession of sources of control signal visually corresponding to the profile of printing density, and hence ink need, at successive peripheral portions of the plate. The vibrated roller is preferably interposed between the source of ink and the form roller, but in a modified form of the invention the form roller itself is vibrated with variation in instantaneous velocity.

    • An ink transfer system for a rotary printing press wherein a helically grooved transfer roll is provided for effectively transferring toward a plate cylinder an ink volume consistent or equal to the usage requirements at any given point or area on the roll surface as determined by the printed image. The transfer roll has the ability to simultaneously transfer ink reversely back onto the fountain roll by reason of its helical grooves being in light contact with a relatively slowly rotating fountain roll. An offset groove and ball arrangement is provided for one of the distribution rolls in the printing press chain of rollers so as to smoothly oscillate the roll for a more even distribution of the ink transversely of each roll in the ink train. The inner face of each fountain roll mount is slightly relieved so as to direct ink away from the outermost ends of the fountain roll thereby substantially preventing fountain leakage.
