    • A method is taught herein of providing a controlled environment for the storage of produce within a portable, standard insulated trailer cabin, wherein the following objectives are accomplished: initiated ripening; ripening; cooling and heat removal; temperature stabilization; and the loading and unloading of palletized fruit on skid-mounted rollers. The invention accomplishes within a portable elongated cabin that which heretofore has only been accomplished in refrigeration rooms built within a fixed building. Ceiling-mounted air cooling units are uniformly distributed throughout the trailer along the long edge of the palletized fruit, thus allowing the cooled and/or treated air to be drawn across the fruit pallets directly and evenly and through as short a path as practical. An air suction chamber is built into the forward part of the trailer, opposite the loading door. Suction fans are built into a thin sheet-metal wall forming this chamber. A plastic membrane roll may be drawn over the top and down one end of a pallet row. It is supported on the suction side of the row against the trailer wall by rest rails. A continuous track of floor-mounted traction steel pipe rollers is provided upon which pallets of fruit may be loaded with a fork lift and then moved forward in the trailer manually.

    • A method and apparatus for providing a stream of fluid around fresh produce, which produce is stored in containers provided with openings in the sides. A consecutive row of a multiplicity of such containers is arranged along a wall some distance from the latter, in such a way that an interspace is formed between the wall and the row. At least one bag which extends along at least one edge of the row is inflated in the interspace by feeding a fluid to the bag, in such a way that the bag produces a seal against the wall on one side and against the row on the other. The fluid fed to the bag flows via outflow openings made in the bag into the interspace and builds up an elevated pressure here. The fluid then flows from the interspace, via the openings in the sides of the container, around the fresh produce. The invention can be used in particular in storage rooms in which rows of containers containing fresh produce can be arranged along opposing side walls. It is particularly advantageous if the inflatable bag, when inflated, is able to form a ring-shaped seal enclosing the interspace on all sides.

    • A packaging method and package for preserving cherries using a low barrier plastic film to provide them with a long shelf life is described. The low barrier plastic film has a gas permeability of at least 80 cc O.sub.2 and 490 cc CO.sub.2 per mil per 100 square inches per day at 25.degree. C. and 760 mm HI. Both high density polyethylene and low density polyethylene films having a thickness in the range of 0.0006 to 0.003 inch are used in examples for packaging bags. However other low barrier film plastics can be used including polypropylene The bags are provided with one or more small perforations to adjust their gas permeability. After cooling the cherries to about 36.degree. F. they are deposited in the bags. The bags are partially evacuated to remove about one half the air and an injection gas of at least 30% CO.sub.2 and the balance N.sub.2 is injected to fill the bag which is then heat sealed. As a result, a residual protective gas of about 4-13% 0.sub.2, 4-14% CO.sub.2 and balance N.sub.2 is maintained in the bag after seven days from sealing. The packages of cherries may be stored at about 28.degree. F. for two months or mere without significant decay or mold and without adversely affecting the appearance or taste of the cherries.

    • A mist-emitting apparatus for a vegetable crisper, having a sprayer attached to an upper portion of a housing. A portion of the housing defines a closable reservoir for a supply of water. Means are provided in the housing for operatively communicating with a lower portion of the reservoir to communicate the water under pressure to the sprayer at predetermined intervals for a predetermined period of time. The water, being communicated to the sprayer, is emitted as a mist. A false bottom extends laterally from a lower portion of the housing for supporting fruits and vegetables above the false bottom. The closable container may be a bag or a cavity in the sidewall of the vegetable crisper, separate from the housing and communicating through a tube that connects with a lower portion of the housing. When originally installed in a refrigerator, the sprayer attaches to an interior wall and extends into a vegetable crisper drawer. A solenoid-actuated valve selectively communicates water to the sprayer from a pressurized supply of water.
