    • The present invention relates to a method and an arrangement in a communication system in which a network management architecture comprises modules representing a virtual reality of network nodes (24) and network links under management. Organization of said modules and information contained in said modules are based on a pre-determined network management schema, whereby said network nodes (24) and said network links are managed by accessing and manipulating said modules. The network management schema is modified by reducing the amount of information in said modules. Then, the modified network management schema is used for managing said communication network system and thereby facilitating communication network system management.

    • Network elements (NE) of a telecommunications network and an application platform (SP), which provides value-added services on top of the network, communicate with each other by means of triggers (T) and handles (H). Triggers (T) are notifications containing information to be sent by a network element to the application platform (SL) upon occurrence of predefined events and handles (H) are commands to be sent by the application platform (SL) requesting execution of predefined actions at said network element (NE). A network element (NE) includes a management information base (MIB) containing managed objects, which describe variables and parameters accessible by a network management system (NMS) to control and monitor the network element (NE). In order to allow systematic interrogation of the triggers and handles interface of a network element (NE), its management information base (MIB) stores additional managed objects which describe the triggers (T) and handles (H) supported by said network element (NE). A software module (NID), which is part of the application platform actively interrogates the network element (NE) to find out which triggers (T) and handles (H) the network element (NE) supports. The module sends requests to the network element and stores in a data model (THB) information on the interface received back from the network element (NE).

    • In a management network, active alarms are received by management devices, acting as agent or as superior manager, each of which can be stored on any of the management devices and can be handled for a specific period of time by operators. The management devices can have different management levels. Operators are coupled to the management devices to handle active alarms for a specific period of time. A checking function is introduced having one or more checking attributes for reciprocal information about alarm handling between the management devices. The checking function having the checking attributes results in automatic coordination between the management devices situated in a manager-agent relationship on different management levels during alarm handling.

    • An enhanced Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) management system for telecommunications networks which efficiently provides many of the sophisticated management techniques enabled by Open Systems Interconnection (OSI), Common Management Information Protocol (CMIP) and Telecommunications Management Network (TMN) protocols, while maintaining the simplicity of SNMP. The enhanced SNMP defines a management state of each SNMP agent, define events which are to be reported from the agent to the management station, and provides a log for recording particular events and associated agent data vales when the events occur. The enhanced SNMP also provides the capability for an alarm, state change, and value change notification to be communicated from the SNMP agents to an SNMP management station when specific events occur at the agent.
