    • A television system is provided comprising a television set with at least one television tuner, and a broadcast data receiver for selective operation to receive data for the generation of one of a number of selectable television channels. Detection means are provided to detect spectral emissions from the television tuner that are a value from its local oscillator to allow identification of an analogue channel selected for display by the user. The broadcast data receiver is controlled to decode and process digital data relating to the identified analogue channel and display the processed digital data to produce the selected channel via the television system.

    • A circuit for discriminating between received signals and a method therefor are provided. The circuit includes a detector for detecting a peak signal based on the degree of correlation between a received signal and a reference signal and a generator for generating a discrimination signal showing that the received signal is a high definition signal if the peak signal is detected in a predetermined period and showing that the received signal is a signal of an analog broadcasting method if the peak signal is not detected in the predetermined period. This can prevent the improper operation of a receiver by automatically determining whether the received signal according to a channel selection is a high definition digital signal or an analog broadcast signal.

    • A receiver which receives both HDTV and NTSC signals, and a method for selecting received signals, are provided. According to this receiver and method, a broadcasting mode and a channel mode are set by the user. When the broadcasting mode is set to be an NTSC mode, only an NTSC signal is selected to be displayed. When the broadcasting mode is set to be an HDTV mode, only a high-definition (ATV) signal is selected to be displayed. When the judged broadcasting mode is an automatic mode, a judgement is made by the receiver whether an NTSC signal exists in a received signal. If no NTSC signal is present in the received signal, the ATV signal is selected for display. If the NTSC signal exists in the currently-received signal, selection between NTSC and ATV signals is made based on the channel mode set by the user. If the channel mode is set to NTSC, then the NTSC signal is selected for display. If the channel mode is set to HDTV, then the ATV signal is selected for display. Therefore, the HDTV and NTSC signals can both be received, and when both NTSC and HDTV signals exist in a channel, one of them can be selectively received.

    • Radio receivers for receiving DTV signals, in accordance with the Advanced Television System Committee (ATSC) standard, or analog TV, in accordance with the National Television Systems Committee (NTSC) standard, each use a single first detector for both types of signal. This single is followed with an intermediate-frequency amplifier providing amplification both for digital television signal and for the amplitude-modulated NTSC video carrier of an analog television signal. Preferably, the shared intermediate-frequency amplifier is a high-band intermediate-frequency amplifier having fixed gain and having its bandwidth determined using a surface-acoustic-wave filter with flat-amplitude midband response, steep-slope skirts, and linear phase throughout its passband. A second mixer, which downconverts the high-band intermediate-frequency amplifier response to a low-band intermediate-frequency signal, is followed by a respective low-band intermediate-frequency amplifier for digital television signal and a respective low-band intermediate-frequency amplifier for the amplitude-modulated NTSC video carrier of an analog television signal. The respective low-band intermediate-frequency amplifier for digital television signal employs automatic gain control of reverse type and avoids automatic gain control of forward type in order to maintain linearity of gain. The respective low-band intermediate-frequency amplifier for the amplitude-modulated NTSC video carrier employs automatic gain control of forward type in order to keep noise figure lower.
