    • This invention relates to a method for decoding a video bitstream comprising the steps of: (a) receiving said video bitstream that includes a layer set, where said layer set identifies a plurality of different layers of said bitstream, where at least one of said plurality of different layers includes a plurality of temporal sub-layers; (b) receiving a video parameter set that includes information related to at least one layer of said video bitstream; (c) receiving a video parameter set extension referenced by said video parameter set that includes data regarding said plurality of different layers and said plurality of temporal sub-layers; (d) receiving a video parameter set temporal sub layers information present flag in said video parameter set extension indicating whether said information about plurality of temporal sub-layers are present.

    • A coding method includes: partitioning an image block to be decoded irregularly according to an irregular partitioning mode and a position parameter to obtain at least two different sub-blocks; comparing the sub-blocks with a reference sub-block to obtain a residual of a pixel value of the image block to be coded; obtaining a reference position parameter according to a surrounding block of the image block to be coded, and subtracting the reference position parameter from the position parameter of the image block to be coded to obtain a position parameter difference of the image block to be coded; quantizing the residual, and performing entropy coding on a result of the quantization, the motion vector information, and the position parameter difference; and writing the entropy coding result and partitioning mode information of the image block into a code stream.

    • Methods and apparatus for stereoscopic image encoding and decoding are described. Left and right eye images are encoded following an entropy reduction operation being applied to one of the eye images when there is a difference between the left and right images of an image pair. Information about regions of negative parallax within the entropy reduced image of an image pair is encoded along with the images. Upon decoding a sharpening filter is applied to the image in an image pair which was subjected to the entropy reduction operation. In addition edge enhancement filtering is performed on the regions of the recovered entropy reduced image which are identified in the encoded image data as regions of negative parallax. Interleaving of left and right eye images at the input of the encoder combined with entropy reduction allows for efficient encoding, storage, and transmission of 3D images.
