    • A multi-wavelength photonic oscillator has a plurality of lasers each emitting light at a different frequency. An optical wavelength multiplexer combines the light emitted by the plurality of lasers at an output thereof as a set of optical wavelengths. An optical modulator is arranged in a feedback loop and coupled to receive light at the output of the optical wavelength multiplexer, the feedback loop further including an optical tap for coupling at least a subset of said set of optical wavelengths to at least one optical output of the multi-wavelength photonic modulator; at least one optical channel having an associated photodetector arranged to receive light from the optical tap via the at least one optical channel; and an electronic loop portion coupled to receive output from the at least one associated photodetector and to provide an input for the optical modulator.

    • An optical transmitter architecture has a return-to-zero (RZ) laser modulator coupled in cascade with a non-return-to-zero (NRZ) laser modulator. Modulator bias and electronic phase delay bias are controlled using dither-based feedback, so as to align the phase of the RZ clock signal with that of the NRZ data. A first method uses an RZ quadrature AM dither or an RZ nullhillclimbernull bias dither, to apply a relatively low frequency dither signal to a variable RF delay for the RZ clock signal applied to the RZ modulator or NRZ data signal applied to the NRZ modulator. A second method is an RZ quadrature AM dither or nullhillclimbernull bias dither scheme that applies equal amplitude and opposite phase dither signals to perform complementary modulation of both the RZ and NRZ MZ modulators simultaneously.

    • The present invention aims at providing an optical transmitter utilizing a Mach-Zehnder type optical modulator, in which the optical modulator is capable of readily optimizing an optical wavelength chirp to be added to a transmission optical signal. To this end, the optical transmitter of the present invention includes a Mach-Zehnder type optical modulator having two arms driven by two drive signals, respectively, and is constituted to comprise: amplitude adjusting parts for adjusting the amplitudes of the drive signals, respectively; phase adjusting parts for adjusting the phases of the drive signals, respectively; an amplitude controlling part for feedback controlling the amplitude adjusting parts so that an amplitude ratio between the drive signals becomes a value corresponding to an optimum optical wavelength chirp amount; and a phase controlling part for feedback controlling the phase adjusting parts so that the phases of the drive signals are brought into an antiphase relation.
