    • Example apparatus, methods, and computers control configurable, variable data reduction. One example method includes identifying data reduction controlling attributes in an object to be data reduced by a configurable variable data reducer. The attributes provide information upon which decisions concerning whether and/or how to data reduce the object can be based. The example method also includes controlling a configurable variable data reducer to selectively data reduce the object based, at least in part, on the data reduction controlling attributes. The control exercised can determine whether, where, when, and/or how data reduction will proceed.

    • Data from a first mirror of a data volume is returned to the computer system in response to receiving the first read request. Additionally, data from second mirror of the data volume is read in response to receiving the first read request. The data read from the second mirror may be stored in a cache memory. The computer system may check the returned data to determine whether it is corrupted. If corrupted, the computer system sends a second read request for the same data. Rather than returning the same corrupted data stored in the first mirror, a copy of the requested data is returned from the cache memory.

    • For processing an input message signal into a processed message signal, an on-line computer system comprises a saving buffer for memorizing as a memorized message signal a received message signal supplied from a message receiving circuit for receiving the input message signal. A processing unit produces a first request signal to be supplied with the received message signal as a first supplied message signal and produces a second request signal to be supplied with the memorized message signal as a second supplied message signal while processing the first and the second supplied message signals into the processed message signal. The memorized message signal is erased from the saving buffer when the processing unit produces a normal end signal representing a normal end of processing. The memorized message signal may be erased from the saving buffer when the processing unit produces the first request signal. The processing unit may be supplied with the second supplied message signal by producing a third request signal when the processing unit fails to process the first and the second supplied message signals.

    • A method for initializing a communication network in a train including a plurality of cars, the network comprising a train bus, a train bus master on one of the cars and a train bus slave on each other car connectable to the train bus master by the train bus for communicating with the train bus master. The method includes determining whether the one car with the train bus master is located at one end of the train or is in the middle of the train. The method further includes transmitting first messages between the train bus master and each train bus slave, respectively, located in one direction for assigning an address to each train bus slave located in that one direction and acquiring data at the train bus master uniquely identifying the respective train bus slaves in that one direction. The method further includes transmitting, when the determining step determines that the one car is located in the middle of the train, second messages between the train bus master and each train bus slave, respectively, located in an other direction for assigning an address to each train bus slave located in the other direction and acquiring data at the train bus master uniquely identifying the respective slaves in the other direction.
