摘要： An optical switch for switching light from one leg of an optical circuit to another leg is characterized by an arrangement for altering the index of refraction of one of the legs with respect to the other leg. This results in a disparity in light velocity and a change in phase relationship for the light being propagated through the legs. When the legs are brought into a coupling region, there occurs a predetermined transfer of light from one leg to the other, depending upon the magnitude of the alteration in phase relationship between the light propagated in the legs.

摘要： Optical signal processing devices, primarily intended for use in integrated optical communication systems, include 3 dB coupled strip guide directional couplers. Each coupler is formed in a body of electrooptic material and includes electrodes bracketing at least one of the guides in the coupled region. Each coupler is fabricated so as to be overcoupled (i.e., greater than 3 dB coupling) when the coupling is synchronous. Voltage bias, supplied to the electrodes of each coupler, produces sufficient asynchronism to independently adjust each coupler to the desired 3 dB coupling condition. Permutation switches are produced by including a switchable phase shifter between two couplers. Channel drop filters are produced by including reflection gratings between two couplers. Differential phase detectors, for a pulse code modulation system, are produced by including a selected path length difference between the two strip guides connecting two couplers. A photolithographic technique for producing the required electrodes in precise registry with the strip guide couplers (typically characterized by 3 micrometer spacings) includes the use of the primary strip guide mask and a secondary mask to produce a photolithographic mask for defining the electrodes.

摘要： A mode-locked semiconductor laser capable of changing the spacing between the carrier frequencies of its output comb. In an example embodiment, the mode-locked semiconductor laser is implemented as a hybrid solid-state device comprising a III-V semiconductor chip and a silicon chip attached to one another to form a laser cavity. The III-V semiconductor chip includes a gain medium configured to generate light in response to being electrically and/or optically pumped. The silicon chip includes a plurality of optical waveguides arranged to provide multiple optical paths of different effective lengths for the light generated in the laser cavity. Different optical paths can be controllably selected, using one or more optical switches connected between the optical waveguides, to change the effective optical length of the laser cavity and, as a result, the output-comb frequency spacing. In some embodiments, the output-comb frequency spacing can be changeable at least by a factor of 1.5.

摘要： A universal interferometer (100) for coupling modes of electromagnetic radiation according to a transformation has N inputs and N outputs for inputting and outputting N modes of electromagnetic radiation into and from the interferometer. Waveguides (101, 102, 103, 104, 105) pass through the interferometer to connect the N inputs to the N outputs and to carry the N modes of electromagnetic radiation. The waveguides provide crossing points between pairs of waveguides and a reconfigurable beam splitter (107) implements a reconfigurable reflectivity and a reconfigurable phase shift at each crossing point. The waveguides and crossing points are arranged such that each of the N modes of electromagnetic radiation is capable of coupling with each of the other modes of electromagnetic radiation at respective reconfigurable beam splitters. The couplings between modes at the reconfigurable beam splitters are configured such that the interferometer implements a transformation of the N modes between the N inputs and the N outputs.

摘要： A spectrometer includes an interferometer having a first interference arm and a second interference arm to produce interference patterns from incident light. At least one of the interference arms includes a series of cascaded optical switches connected by two (or more) waveguides of different lengths. Each optical switch directs the incident light into one waveguide or another, thereby changing the optical path length difference between the first interference arm and the second interference arm. This approach can be extended to multi-mode incident light by placing parallel interferometers together, each of which performs spectroscopy of one single mode in the multi-mode incident light. To maintain the compactness of the spectrometer, adjacent interferometers can share one interference arm.

At least one of the two waveguide arms having a set of discrete waveguide portions, the discrete waveguide portions of the set being connected by optical switches which are configured to tunably select from a plurality of different physical path-lengths through the discrete waveguide portions of the at least one waveguide arm.
