The concave side of the second meniscus lens is adjacent to the convex side of the first meniscus lens and the concave side of the first meniscus lens faces the light source module for receiving light therefrom. In addition, light-collecting illumination systems are disclosed, which include a plurality of light source modules and a system of optical elements comprising a plurality of pairs of meniscus lenses, each pair being associated with a light source module.

    • An illuminating unit with a compact design which is capable of improving collimating characteristics of beams emitted from a plurality of light sources positioned at different locations, and a projection-type image display apparatus employing the illuminating unit. The illuminating unit includes a base, a plurality of light sources that are positioned at different locations on the base to emit beams of different wavelength bands, and at least one color filter with a predetermined curvature to reflect one or more beams of predetermined wavelengths from among the beams emitted by the plurality of light sources such that the reflected one or more beams propagate in a first direction and to pass one or more remaining beams of other wavelength bands. In the illuminating unit, the beams of different wavelength bands emitted by the plurality of light sources are combined to emit a combination of these beams in the first direction. The projection-type image display apparatus includes the illuminating unit, an optical integrator to receive a collimated beam from the illuminating unit and to make a uniform therefrom, an image-forming system to receive the uniform beam from the optical integrator and to produce an image by selectively reflecting the uniform beam, a beam splitter disposed in an optical path between the illuminating unit and the image-forming system to change the optical path of incident beams such that a beam incident from the illuminating unit is directed toward the image-forming system while a beam incident from the image-forming system is directed toward a screen, and a projection lens unit disposed adjacent to the beam splitter opposite the image-forming system to enlarge the image produced by the image-forming system and to project the enlarged image onto the screen.

    • A highly efficient projection system is provided, including a light source, a color separator, a scrolling unit, a light valve, a projection lens unit, and a polarization conversion system. The color separator separates an incident beam according to color. The scrolling unit includes at least one lens cell and converts a rotation of the lens cell into a rectilinear motion of an area of the lens cell through which light passes so the incident beam is scrolled. The light valve processes a beam transmitted by the color separator and the scrolling unit, according to an image signal and forms a color picture. The projection lens unit magnifies the color picture formed by the light valve and projects the magnified color picture onto a screen. The polarization conversion system is installed between the color separator and the light valve and converts the incident beam into a beam with a single polarization.

    • An optical apparatus for producing chromatic dispersion. The apparatus includes a virtually imaged phased array (VIPA) generator, a mirror and a lens. The VIPA generator receives an input light at a respective wavelength and produces a corresponding collimated output light traveling from the VIPA generator in a direction determined by the wavelength of the input light, the output light thereby being spatially distinguishable from an output light produced for an input light at a different wavelength. The mirror has a cone shape, or a modified cone shape. The lens focuses the output light traveling from the VIPA generator onto the mirror so that the mirror reflects the output light. The reflected light is directed by the lens back to the VIPA generator. In this manner, the apparatus provides chromatic dispersion to the input light. The modified cone shape of the mirror can be designed so that the apparatus provides a uniform chromatic dispersion to light in the same channel of a wavelength division multiplexed light. The mirror can be moved in a direction perpendicular to an angular dispersion direction of the VIPA generator, to change the amount of chromatic dispersion provided to the input light.
