    • The air damper includes a piston reciprocating within a cylindrical housing. The piston includes a lip seal which is made of rubber or thermoplastic elastomer impregnated with a minimum of 3% molybdenum/seal part weight, or a minimum of 2% polytetrafluoroethylene or silicone/seal part weight or a minimum of 1% wax/seal part weight. The lip seal is coated with a minimum of 0.5%/seal part weight graphite powder/molybdenum disulfide. The housing is made with a minimum of 2% silicone impregnated thermoplastic or a minimum of 2% moly sulfide impregnated thermoplastic. This provides for increased smoothness of operation of the air damper, particularly at low speeds.

    • A piston-cylinder unit includes a cylinder having an axis and an inner surface and a piston assembly attached to a piston rod and received in the cylinder for axial movement. The piston assembly includes a piston body, which has a plurality of radially resiliently deformable wall portions at its perimeter, the wall portions being spaced apart circumferentially from each other. Each wall portion has opposite ends that are joined integrally with the piston body and is defined by an opening in the body. Each wall portion engages the inner surface of the cylinder and deforms resiliently radially with respect to the axis of the cylinder to compensate for tolerance variations in the inner surface of the cylinder. The piston assembly may include a piston ring, which is received on the piston body with centering surfaces to restrict its radial movement and which functions to block and unblock a fluid bypass between sections of the cylinder on opposite sides of the piston assembly.

    • A positioning element to position two objects which are movable in relation to one another includes a cylinder in which there is an axially movable piston rod with a piston. The piston sealingly divides the cylinder into two working chambers by a piston ring, each of the working chambers containing blocking medium. The sealing by the piston ring can be bypassed during an insertion stroke of the piston rod. The piston includes a piston base body and a valve element, the valve element being movable along the base body to open and close a flow connection between the working chambers. An external opening force can displace the valve element to open the flow connection and permit an automatic extension stroke of the piston rod. The valve element remains open during the extension stroke on account of the flow of blocking medium through the flow connection. The valve element can be displaced to close the flow connection in response to stopping the extension stroke of the piston rod to position the two objects. To restart the extension stroke of the piston rod, a greater external opening force can be required than was necessary to start the initial extension stroke of the piston rod.

    • A piston for a shock absorber as may be used in an automobile comprises a piston body, and a piston ring which covers the outer periphery thereof. One end of the piston ring is formed as a bend, which is received in a first receiving groove formed in the piston body. The first receiving groove comprises opposing end faces which extend in a direction orthogonal to the axis of the piston body, and a bottom surface which connects together the both end faces. The tip of the bend is disposed in abutment against the corner defined by one of the end faces and the bottom surface. As compared with the prior arrangement in which the end face comprising the corner is formed as a tapered surface, the tip of the bend is less likely to be displaced radially outward, thus reducing the possibility that he bend may be disengaged from he first receiving groove.

    • A piston for use in a hydraulic cylinder which is subject to sudden and extremely high shock load pressures and high temperature operating conditions is provided with a plurality of interlocking axially-spaced circumferential grooves. A relatively thin, flat washer of heat-formable fluoropolymer is snapped over a retaining ring integral with the piston and the piston is then moved axially through a heated hot-forming cylinder, causing the washer to conform to the cylindrical shape of the piston. At least one circumferential groove has a side wall which is undercut relative to its cylindrical surface to provide a locking angle. Preheating the washer prior to hot-forming the band and forming a sloping ramp in opposition to the undercut side wall result in improved flow of the fluoropolymer toward the undercut side wall. An additional advantage of the preheating is the formation of an improved band skirt with an improved, sharply-defined sealing edge.

When the strut rebounds or extends its piston rod fluid is forced to flow through the restrictive passages preferably at a more restricted rate. The flow passages are arranged to direct fluid flow toward the outer cylinder borewall to improve heat transfer to the exterior of the strut and minimize heating of the fluid contained in the cylinder chambers, and preferably in such a way as to minimize intermingling with a significant portion of the remaining fluid.
