    • A support foot for a modular safety rail system comprises a base plate having upper and lower surfaces and an outer periphery, a plurality of sockets positioned inwards of the periphery and extending from the upper surface for location of a vertical post, a plurality of webs provided at the upper surface and each extending from a socket towards the periphery, each web extending from the base plate to an upper edge surface of the web, the lower surface of the base plate having at least one recess whereby when one support foot is stacked on top of another at least one of a distal end of a socket and an upper edge of a web engages the recess to prevent lateral movement of the feet, and the upper edge surface of each web being able to support the lower surface of a superimposed support foot to resist toppling.

    • An upwardly extending structure is secured to a based support system comprising a series of individual blocks 25 interlocked with a linking beam 26. Each incorporates a groove in its top face which receives the linking beam 26. U-shaped bolts 29A are located in grooves formed in the two sides of the block 25 and running around the base. The ends of the bolts will be fixed to securing plates 29B. Each block has a pair of protrusions and a pair of recesses in both side walls so that the blocks can be interlocked with one another. This reduces the need for all of the blocks to be positively attached to the linking beam 26. Thus, pairs of blocks can be unsecured to the linking beam between two blocks which are positively attached to the beam 26. Attachment plates 32 can be secured to the sides of the linking beam 26.

    • Equipment support systems and modular platforms provide an equipment support portion with lateral walkways and work areas. The platforms have a skeletal frame that supports a plurality of grates to form the work area. The frame of the platforms also has a number of support legs with circular bases at their lower ends to rest upon the roof or other support surface. The circular bases distribute the load of the supported equipment evenly upon the roof so that specific spots are not overloaded. Outriggers may be removably added to the platform to increase the dimensions of the platform thereby making the platform and supported equipment less prone to overturning from wind loading. Methods are described for providing a support platform designed to resist a specific design wind load. In some preferred embodiments, one or more of the support legs of the platforms are adjustable in length, to allow portions of the platform to be adjusted for differential settlement of the roof.

    • Methods and devices for providing temporary handrail systems such as those used to surround the periphery of a building rooftop. A number of handrail sections are reversibly interconnected to one another to form a continuous protective rail. In practice, the rail is quite stable and resistant to tipping. In described embodiments, the handrail systems of the present invention feature load-distributing support bases and weight support platforms. Weights are selectively added to the weight support platforms to anchor the handrail in place. The weight support platforms are located above the surface of the roof and do not contact the roof surface. The weight load is transmitted via a support leg downwardly to a load-distributing support base that is placed in contact with the roof. As a result, the roof membrane is not damaged by a point load applied to it. In addition, a portion of the weight load from the weight support platform is transmitted directly to the vertical support rails of the rail sections. Thus, the rails are more securely anchored in place and have greater resistance to movement of the rail either forwardly or backwardly. The handrail arrangement of the present invention offers improved stability over conventional systems. The rail sections readily interlock to form a continuous rail. The interlocking structure also allows the rail sections to be angled with respect to one another. The interlocking feature increases the stability of the rail.

    • An attachment assembly provides a secure attachment point for the fall arrest tether lines of safety harnesses of workers on flat roofs, the assembly being movable over the roof as required. The assembly can be used alone, but usually is mounted on a wheeled utility cart as employed by roofers to move materials on the roof, or may be an integral part of such a cart. The assembly has a base frame that is spaced from the roof edge over which the worker may fall. An attachment member for tether lines is mounted on the base frame together with at least two longitudinally spaced surface engaging arm, the arms being located at the frame side nearer to the roof edge. When the assembly is in operative position each arm has its lower end, which usually has teeth, close to the roof surface. A counterweight is mounted on the opposite side of the base frame. Upon a fall from the roof the tether line pulls on the attachment member downward and toward the edge, the pull tilting the base and cart frames to engage the teeth with the roof surface, whereupon the ends become pivots about which the frames can pivot against the counterweight, which ensures only minor tilting and/or dragging of the assembly toward the edge. With e.g. concrete roofs the teeth may be replaced by bolts in the surface against which the arm ends butt for the assembly to pivot.
