    • A paving machine for laying a mat of paving material on a paving surface includes a generator, such as a switched reluctance generator, integrally installed with a pump drive and operatively connected to an output shaft of a power source of the paving machine. The generator outputs AC power to a power converter that in turn outputs DC power for a plurality of screed heating elements to produce heat to warm a screed. The paving machine may also include an insulation monitoring system for determining the occurrences of ground faults in the electrical components by comparing current levels in the components to a predetermined maximum current level. A controller of the paving machine may monitor the temperature of the generator and produce the speed of the power source to prevent overheating.

    • In electrically heated screed assemblies, elements that are prone to failure are the temperature sensors. Typically, each screed plate has a single temperature sensor. When one temperature sensor fails, the controller will look for a working temperature sensor amongst the other screed plates and if more than one temperature sensor is working, the controller will choose the most relevant temperature sensor and use the data from the working temperature sensor to operate the resistive heating elements on the screed plate with the non-functional temperature sensor. If the temperature sensor on an outer screed plate fails, the controller will look to the other outer screed plate temperature sensor for data for purposes of operating the resistive heating elements on the outer screed plate with a broken temperature sensor. Similarly, if the temperature sensor on an inner or central screed plate fails, the controller will look to a neighboring screed plate with a working temperature sensor for data for purposes of operating the inner or center screed plate with the broken temperature sensor. The controller will generate signals for the operator to replace the failed temperature sensor.

    • A road finisher has a terminal box from which an electric supply circuit originates to supply electric current to at least one electric heating element for heating work components. A device for supervising the function of the at least one electric heating element includes an induction coil at the terminal box to sense current in the supply circuit and an indicator circuit, preferably of a light emitting diode, is connected to the induction coil for detecting and indicating a voltage induced in the induction coil by the current flowing in the supply circuit of a heating element. In a preferred embodiment, a cable gland is attached to the control box through which a current supply wire of the electric supply circuit passes, and an induction coil is located in the cable gland to sense the current in the supply wire.

    • A burner assembly for heating a screed plate of a screed assembly connected to a frame of a paving machine. The screed assembly includes a heating chamber adjacent to the screed plate. The burner assembly includes a blower that moves air into the heating chamber, and a fuel injection system including a fuel valve. The fuel injection system introduces fuel to the heating chamber. The burner assembly further includes an igniter that ignites the fuel to produce a flame, a thermocouple positioned within an expected flame path, and a controller. The thermocouple generates a thermocouple voltage having a relationship to a temperature surrounding a junction of the thermocouple, and the controller operates the fuel valve based in part on the thermocouple voltage.

    • A paving machine employs an electrically heated screed assembly to uniformly heat a screed plate of the machine. Uniform heating is achieved by inserting a thermally conductive plate between electrical heating elements and the screed plate. An insulation layer may be provided above the heating elements to direct the heat downward into the thermally conductive plate. The heat spreads relatively uniformly throughout the thermally conductive plate, thereby uniformly heating the screed plate. A clamping mechanism is also provided that, when tightened, provides a compressive force, thereby holding the assembly in place. When released, the pressure is alleviated, thus permitting a heating element to be removed for repair or replacement without the need to remove the screed plate.
