    • An object of the present invention is to provide a vehicle steering apparatus that detects the tire load, and based on the detected tire load, performs steering control which accurately reflects the road conditions. A vehicle steering apparatus of the present invention includes a control unit 14, which controls a steering actuator in accordance with the operation of a steering wheel 1. An operation reaction force generated by a reaction force actuator 9 is applied to the steering wheel. Within the tire W, stress sensors SL and SR and an air pressure sensor SP are provided. The control unit 14 controls the steering actuator 2 and the reaction force actuator 9 with referring to the tire load detected by these sensors.

    • Steering wheel return assist mechanism for use in a vehicle having a steering column assembly rotatably supporting a steering shaft comprises a spring operated return assist device which permits a limited degree of free rotation of the steering shaft before activation of the mechanism. The return assist device urges the shaft and the steering wheel to a near central neutral position after rotation of the steering wheel. In a second embodiment, a second return assist means structured substantially the same and spaced axially apart and inverted along the steering shaft from the first return assist means is disclosed so that the steering shaft is urged to a near central neutral position after the steering wheel has been turned in either direction.

    • A steering apparatus for artificially establishing steering feel in a steering system not having a mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the steerable wheels. The apparatus includes a hydraulic steering motor connected to the steerable wheels. A steering wheel position sensor and a steerable wheel position sensor each produce an electrical signal respectively indicative of the steering wheel position and the position of the steerable wheels. An electronic control unit monitors the sensor signals and controls a solenoid operated directional control valve to steer the vehicle in a direction and at a steering rate in response to the monitored signals. An electromagnetic friction brake is connected to a support and to the input shaft and is controlled by the electronic control unit to provide steering feel. The friction brake includes an armature fixed to the support and a brake member secured for rotation with the input shaft via a spline conneciton. The brake member is movable toward the armature under the influence of the magnetic field generated by the armature. The degree of mechanical coupling between the armature and the brake member is proportional to the magnetic field strength. Steering feel is controlled by the electronic control unit in response to the difference between the desired steering direction, as determined from the steering wheel position sensor, and the actual steering direction, as determined from the steerable wheel position sensor.
