摘要： The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for folding and sealing a web of material to form an item with a contoured seal such as a valve bag. Folding apparatus form the web of film into a continuous tubular web having upper and lower sections, a closed side and an open side. The open side has two folded flaps that extend into an inside area of the tubular web. A longitudinal sealer includes a floating sealer located inside the tubular web. The floating sealer and its contoured heating element are selectively and intermittently pressed against the overlapping flaps to form a contoured seal that bonds the flaps together. The contoured seal defines a self-sealing valve port through which product is poured to fill the bag. Pairs of repelling magnets biasingly elevate the floating sealer above the overlapping flaps when the longitudinal sealer is in its release position. The sealer “floats” inside the continuous tubular web so that the web can be intermittently drawn past the floating sealer with a minimal amount of drag.

The side gussets (36, 38) are sealed to the tube (26) and/or the zipper profile (18) with the profile sealed to the tube. The tube (26) is sealed and cross-cut to form the bag (56). In an alternative method, lengths of tubular gusset material (112) are positioned on a lower web (110) of film (101) transverse to a bag-forming direction. A zipper (124) is sealed in the bag-forming direction to the webs (108, 110), and the gusset material (112). The webs (108, 110) and the material (112) are sealed to each other to form an end seal (140) as well as cross-cut and sealed to form the gussets (144, 148) of a reclosable bag (147). The webs (108, 110) may be sealed above the zipper (124) to form a tamper-evident feature (166).

An upper edge portion of the package is removable, including one of the side gussets, to form a pour spout for dispensing the contents of the package. A fastener strip, which can be detachably connected to itself, extends between confronting inside surfaces of the front and rear package panels, adjacent to the pour spout, whereby the pour spout can be conveniently closed after the package is initially opened. A method of forming the present package is also disclosed.

摘要： A sealing mechanism for a form, fill and seal packing machine having box motion sealers suitable for forming seals in both continuously and intermittently advancing webs. The sealers are disposed on opposite sides of the web and are operable to reciprocate into and out of engagement with the web. The sealers are further supported on carriages moveable longitudinally along the web path. As a result, the sealers may be operated in the box motion in which the sealers actuate into engagement with the web as the carriages move longitudinally downstream at the web speed. The sealers remain engaged with the web for a time sufficient to form a seal in the web before retracting out of engagement. The carriages then return longitudinally upstream to initial positions. The box motion may be repeated to form a series of seals in the web.
