    • An apparatus for securing a sheet of filter material about the circumference of a dye tube. The apparatus includes a mandrel support table having a tube loading station, a sheet wrapping station, a sealing station, and a discharge station; hollow, air permeable mandrels supported on the table; a table drive to sequentially index the mandrels to each of the stations; a vacuum chamber extending from the tube wrapping station to the sealing station to draw a vacuum inside each mandrel at and between the wrapping and sealing stations; a tube feeder for feeding tubes onto mandrels at the tube loading station; a sheet feeder for feeding sheets of filter material into engagement with tubes at the wrapping station; a mandrel drive for rotating each mandrel at the wrapping station to wrap the sheet around the circumference of a tube supported on the mandrel; and a sealer at the sealing station for sealing the sheet to itself to cover the tube. In one embodiment the sealer is a heated roller which wraps and seals the sheet around the tube simultaneously in a single operation.

    • A barrier liner for sealing reinforced composite vessels at cryogenic temperatures is provided wherein the barrier liner is composed of a polymeric composition containing a curing agent, such as a methyl bis-methyl anthranilate, and an elastomer adhesive, such as a two-part polyether based urethane adhesive. A method of manufacturing and applying the barrier liner is also provided, including the steps of mixing and degassing the polymeric composition and introducing the polymeric composition between two polyethylene carrier sheets. The two carrier sheets and the intermediate polymeric composition layer are then passed between two sizing rollers set apart at a predetermined distance. The encapsulated polymeric composition is then partially cured to a tacky gel state and cooled to arrest polymerization until application of the gel layer. The gel layer and the two carrier sheets can then be cut into any desired shape such as strips, and applied to the inner surface of a vessel. The interior wall of the vessel may be heated prior to application of the gel layer. To apply the polymeric gel layer, one of the carrier sheets is removed to expose a tacky surface of the polymeric gel layer which is then applied to the vessel wall. When application of the polymeric gel layer is complete, the gel layer may be fully cured at ambient temperature and pressure to form a hardened barrier liner which is capable of maintaining a barrier to fluids at cryogenic temperatures.

    • An apparatus for thermoplastic welding together by fusion bonding an assembly of composite parts, each having a resin-rich thermoplastic surface layer, along bond lines containing a conductive susceptor includes a weld skate that can be moved along guiding and supporting tooling over the bond line to effect the weld. The skate has an induction work coil and two pressure pads, one on each side of the coil in its direction of motion in operation, for applying pressure to the parts while said induction work coil induces eddy currents in the susceptor to heat the susceptor by resistive heating and melt the thermoplastic surface layers. The skate has bearings projecting from its side into cam grooves machined into the sides of the tooling for guiding and supporting the skate during welding by the induction work coil. The tooling, which supports the parts during welding as well as guiding the skate, includes several sets of spaced-apart parallel plates forming between them a slot dimensioned to receive the skate while the skate is supported and guided by engagement of the projecting bearings into the cam grooves, and the forces exerted by the skate pressure pads on the parts are reacted through the tooling by the projecting bearings in the tooling cam grooves. A floor assembly jig includes a box frame having end and intermediate support structures for supporting the tooling parallel to the plane of the box frame. The skate is coupled to a motive means having a servomotor and a loop of chain trained around two spaced sprockets for moving the skate at a controlled speed along the tooling over the susceptors in the bond line while the inductive work coil generates eddy currents in the susceptor to heat the thermoplastic in the bond line, and the pressure pads press the parts together to facilitate fusion bonding of the faying thermoplastic surface layers on the parts.
