The advantages are that the clamping mechanism is perfectly synchronized and, if the central segment of a feed bar is removed, end segments will not hang down.

    • To apply exactly a variety of operating patterns to an automatic transfer apparatus for use in a forging press, an arrangement is proposed comprising: intermediate frames each mounted on an external frame so as to move freely up and down; a clamp frame mounted on the intermediate frame so as to move freely in a lateral direction; a pair of beams mounted on the clamp frame so as to open and close freely; servo motors for performing upward and downward motion, lateral motion and opening-and-closing motion; and drive control equipment. The operation patters are inputted to a microcomputer for picture processing and displayed. Accordingly, the driving operations are exactly controlled by pulse signals and feedback pulses of the servo motors. The arrangement is applicable to various types of motions. Feed motion being of the longest stroke is linear and therefore positioning becomes accurate. The construction is advantageous in accomplishing a small-sized and light-weight automatic transfer apparatus.

    • A progressive former having quick-change tooling provides tooling supports with means for adjusting the tools. The tooling is mounted so that the tooling and the structure for adjusting the tooling can be removed as units without loss of the fine-tuning of the adjustments and so that reinstallation does not require readjustment of the tooling. A transfer also provides adjustable cams for opening and closing gripper fingers which transport workpieces from one work station to the next. The adjustable cams are removable with the dies as units and can be reinstalled without further fine-tune adjustment. With the invention, entire tool sets can be changed in a very short time to eliminate loss of production capacity of the machine. Similar sized machines are provided with a fixed spacing between the locating surfaces for the stationary dies and the reciprocating tools so that tool sets having adjustments fine-tuned in one machine can be installed in a similar machine without further retuning of the adjustments.

    • A multi-station press, having a press frame, a press bed and a ram tooled for performing sequential work operations at plural stations and a transfer mechanism for transporting work pieces from one station to the next, has positively driven finger operating mechanism. The transfer mechanism includes transfer rails and fingers extending inwardly toward the work station. The finger operating mechanism includes an actuating rod mounted for sliding movement on each transfer rail, a finger pull-back lever pivoted to the transfer rail and engaging the finger, with the actuating rod including an upstanding tooth for engaging the finger pull-back lever. In one embodiment two teeth are provided for rotating the lever to both open and close the fingers. An actuating lever pivotally mounted to the transfer rails operates the actuating rods. The actuating lever includes a depending follower received in a roll slot member mounted for lateral sliding movement on the press frame, the roll slot accommodating the longitudinal reciprocating motion of the transfer rail and actuating lever mounted thereto. A cam lever is pivotally mounted to the press frame and has a first end engaged with the roll slot member. The other end of the cam lever is driven by a press cam shaft. The cam assembly includes first and second cams mounted to a hub assembly which permits adjustment of the cam relative to each other. Each cam further comprises an adjustment segment for extending the profile, as desired. The cam lever includes two cam followers, one engaged with each cam, providing a positive drive for the cam lever and the entire finger operating mechanism.

    • Apparatus for converting short tubular elements into nuts, fittings, sleeves, or other annular fasteners or couplers comprises means defining a plurality of stations including a receiving station and a plurality of working stations. Each tubular element must be positioned in each station in the course of its conversion. The receiving station is constructed to establish a predetermined orientation of each tube received thereby. Mechanism is provided for automatic and successive transfer of the tube elements from the receiving to the following stations, in series relation. Tooling is provided in essentially coaxial alignment with each of the tube elements at each working station. The tooling in each working station is arranged to apply endwise of the tool element in the path thereof and/or, at least in part, along the length and axially thereof to produce a change in configuration and/or dimension of at least a part of the tube element while maintaining its originally provided interior cross section along at least a portion of its length. The transfer mechanism is normally displaced from the receiving and working stations and includes means for engaging tubular elements simultaneously in each of a plurality of stations and to simultaneously carry each engaged tube element from one to the next following stations in each repetitive cycle of its movement. Cycling of the tube elements from one to another station is effected in a rapid and precise substantially linear pattern of movement.

    • An apparatus for the high speed transfer of workpieces in a multi-station machine. The stations are located in a common plane, in axial alignment and are equidistantly spaced. The apparatus utilizes a carrier assembly, which incorporates a pair of parallel barrels with a shaft received within the bore of each barrel. A series of confronting openings, which expose the shafts, are formed in the barrel walls at intervals which correspond with the spacing of the machine stations. A pair of gripping fingers are located at each barrel opening. A first finger is affixed to the barrel, extending outwardly therefrom, while a second finger which is affixed to the shaft, extends through the barrel wall opening to cooperate with the first finger. By pivoting the barrels in unison, with respect to the shafts, which are rotatably locked, the fingers can be caused to assume either a gripping or releasing attitude. A drive pivots the barrels and cooperatively reciprocates the carrier assembly to advance the workpiece from station to station in synchronization with the operation of the machine.
