    • A pressure regulator suitable for use as a breathing demand valve in self-contained breathing equipment comprising a first chamber incorporating an inlet port having an inlet valve therein, preferably in the form of a poppet valve and biased so as to seal of the inlet port, and separated from a second chamber by a diaphragm. The diaphragm co-operates with the end of a stem extending from the poppet valve member of the inlet valve such that, upon inhalation by the user, the diaphragm is deflected towards the inlet valve and exerts a force on the poppet valve stem sufficient to open the poppet valve and, upon exhalation by the user, the diaphragm is deflected away form the inlet valve so that the diaphragm no longer contacts the end of the poppet valve stem and the inlet valve closes. A baffle plate is positioned in between the diaphragm and inlet valve so as to prevent, when the inlet valve is open, a portion of the pressurized fluid flow from impinging upon the underside of the diaphragm and tending to close the inlet valve. Optionally, the end of the diaphragm may incorporate an exhaust port to ambient, which, when the inlet valve is opened, is sealed by the end of the poppet valve stem sealably engaging with a valve seat around the exhaust port.

    • A valve arrangement intended particularly, but not exclusively, for use with a breathing regulator (1) for underwater breathing apparatus includes an outlet side, an inlet (11) through which gas can pass to the outlet side from a source of gas having a pressure above atmospheric pressure, a movable valve means (12) which functions to close the gas inlet, and a servo device (21) for regulating the valve means. The servo device includes a servo housing (21) and two mutually joined arms (24, 26). The arms provide a lever effect whereby the supply of air can be controlled with great precision. The simplicity of the lever arrangement imparts a long useful life to the valve arrangement. A breathing regulator (1) which includes such a valve arrangement is preferably made essentially entirely from a plastic material.

    • A lightweight breathing device for underwater use, and in contaminated air is disclosed. The device employs a one-way valve which requires only one hand to effect operation, and a closure stem which is securely mounted against excessive air pressure from the valve when air is released therethrough from an attached air tank. The one-way valve includes two interfitting components, one of which is rotatable, and which provides air orifices that form an air connection upon rotation to permit the release of air from the air tank. In another embodiment, high pressure air from the air tank is passed into a piston operated pressure reducer prior to being released to the user.

    • An on-board oxygen generating system (OBOGS) includes a molecular sieve oxygen generating system (MSOGS), a breathable gas delivery regulator selectively operable to deliver 100 percent MSOGS output gas or air diluted output gas to a user, a back-up storage plenum and control means arranged so that when air diluted delivery gas is selected a portion of 100 percent MSOG output gas is diverted to charge the storage plenum and when 100 percent MSOG output delivery gas is selected diversion to the storage plenum is automatically prevented. The breathable gas delivery regulator includes an injector adapted to induce a flow of air to mix with 100 percent MSOG output gas when air diluted delivery gas is selected.

    • A first and second stage breathing gas regulator having a first stage redundant piston assembly with a first piston encompassing a second piston. In the eventuality the first piston fails, the second piston provides regulated gas. A safety alarm is provided when a pre-established pressure drop occurs, signalling a decrease in breathing gas by opening to provide gas to drive an audio alarm. The second stage regulator has a balanced second stage that operates with a valve lever in operative relationship to a diaphragm. A hand wheel and cammed valve permit the bypass of breathing gas around the valve of the second stage regulator when required. The outlet of the second stage regulator is provided with a trap door cover to avoid dirt and debris being introduced to the second stage regulator when a hose is not connected thereto.
