The system comprises a sensor to sense a biological characteristic, such as a chemical, physical or physiological characteristic of a bodily tissue or fluid. The method also comprises a nerve stimulator in communication with the sensor to inhibit beating of a heart when the sensor senses the biological characteristic at a first value; and a cardiac stimulator in communication with the sensor to stimulate beating of the heart when the sensor senses the biological characteristic at a second value.

摘要： A system and method for use in an implantable cardiac stimulation device permits automatic induction of a tachyarrhythmia of a heart to permit the performance of an electrophysiological test of the heart. A pulse generator repeatedly delivers a group of first and second sets of pacing pulses to a chamber of the heart. The pacing pulses are separated in time by interpulse intervals to overdrive pace a chamber of the heart. A processor, coupled to the pulse generator, varies the second set of interpulse intervals according to a predetermined protocol after each group of pacing pulses is delivered to the chamber of the heart. The successive groups of pacing pulses are delivered to the heart until the tachyarrhythmia is induced.

摘要： An electro-stimulation device includes a pair of electrodes for connection to at least one location in the body that affects or regulates the heartbeat. The electro-stimulation device both electrically arrests the heartbeat and stimulates the heartbeat. A pair of electrodes are provided for connection to at least one location in the body that affects or regulates the heartbeat. The pair of electrodes may be connected to an intravenous catheter for transvenous stimulation of the appropriate nerve. A first switch is connected between a power supply and the electrodes for selectively supplying current from the power supply to the electrodes to augment any natural stimuli to the heart and thereby stop the heart from beating. A second switch is connected between the power supply and the electrodes for selectively supplying current from the power supply to the electrodes to provide an artificial stimulus to initiate heartbeating. In another aspect, the invention is directed to a method for arresting the beat of a heart in a living body comprising the steps of connecting the pair of electrodes to at least one location in the body that affects or regulates the heartbeat and supplying an electrical current to the electrodes of sufficient amplitude and duration to arrest the heartbeat. The device may also serve to still the lungs by input to a respirator or by stimulation of the phrenic nerve during surgical procedures.

摘要： A method for detecting a heart disorder comprises examination of a phase-plane plot (PPP) of a patient electrocardiogram (EKG). The PPP's degree of deterministic chaos may be measured by a processor. Analysis of the PPP may indicate a propensity for fibrillation, that is, indicate both the risk of fibrillation and its actual onset (cases where risk is 100 percent). A second method for detecting a heart disorder comprises examination of a frequency-domain transform (such as an FFT) of a patient EKG. An automatic defibrillating device may comprise means for delivering a variable shock, the size of which is determined at least in part by the FFT's peak energy. A method for detecting drug toxicity comprises examination of a parameter time constant for an action-potential duration (APD) restitution curve which is constructed for the patient.
