    • A graphical user interface for use in phacoemulsification surgical systems that allows a user to select different pulse modes by touching portions of the display screen. The user interface includes first and second display elements. One display element includes a representation of the on-time of the pulses, and the other display element includes a representation of the off-time. The representations show how the on-time and off-time change relative to a position of a controller, such as a foot pedal. The representation show a constant time, or that a time increases or decreases as the foot pedal is pressed. To select a pulse mode, a user can scroll through different pulse representations by touching the screen at the display elements. The selected pulse mode can be continuous, pulse, burst, or a combination or derivation thereof.

    • A powered surgical system includes a power console with locking speed control capabilities. The surgical power console delivers power to two separate surgical instruments, particularly surgical handpieces used in orthopedic procedures. The user/console interface includes footswitches, handpiece mounted switches, and front panel controls. The console provides controls for speed and direction of the handpiece, as well as the ability to switch directions on a variable time basis. Advantageously, the console provides a “cruise control” capability which locks in the speed of a particular handpiece. Once the cruise control option is selected, the surgeon can engage the cruise control function simply by using a “gas pedal” footswitch. Once a desired handpiece speed is established, the surgeon's foot can be removed from the footswitch, allowing the surgeon greater comfort, greater range of motion, and improved access to the operational situs. Disengagement of cruise control is achieved easily by actuating any of the foot control or front panel switches, for example.

    • A microsurgery system comprising an instrument including a source of vacuum and control means, a remotely connected handpiece adapted to be disposed in the vicinity of the situs of the surgery and including an inlet and suction conduit means coupled to the inlet and to the vacuum source for carrying material away from the surgery situs. The system also includes a cassette assembly arranged for releasable securement to the instrument. The control means of the instrument includes an interrupter bar which cooperates with the cassette assembly for selectively isolating the vacuum source from the suction conduit means. The cassette assembly comprises a body portion, a collection vessel, a first port communicating with the suction conduit and a second port communicating with the vacuum source. Occludable conduit means are coupled between the first and second ports and are arranged to be engaged by the interrupter bar in response to a first signal to isolate the vacuum source from the suction means. The collection vessel is coupled to the suction conduit to collect the material extracted from the surgery situs. The cassette also includes similar means for enabling or disabling the flow of infusion liquid through an infusion line to the surgery situs. A hydrophobic filter and a check valve are also located within the cassette assembly.

    • Foot controller apparatus is characterized by providing for remote foot control by a minimum size foot pedal device of the flow of compressed air to an air driven dental handpiece or the like without the necessity of bulky air lines passing through or the incorporation of complicated electrical or mechanical mechanisms in the foot pedal device, as follows. An outwardly biased, depressible foot pedal device includes a diaphragm therein for forming an air sealed chamber which reduces in volume upon depression of the foot pedal device and conveys an air flow through an elongate tube to a diaphragm operated, air modulating, regulator valve positioned away from the foot pedal device and in the compressed air conduit leading to the dental handpiece for pneumatically operating the valve to control the flow of compressed air to the dental handpiece for driving same. The apparatus may also preferably include a diaphragm operated electrical switch mechanism electrically connected with electrically operated valves in chip air and coolant water conduits to the handpiece and with the foot pedal air tube for being pneumatically operated by the foot pedal device for controlling the flow of chip air and coolant water through the dental handpiece.
