    • A brushroll having a spindle and a pair of end assemblies each including a thread guard, a shouldered stub shaft, a bearing and an end cap. The thread guards each include a pair of radially spaced annular wall portions which define channels opening outward from the spindle. The end caps have peripheral walls which extend into the channels defined by the thread guards to prevent threads loosened by the brushroll from fouling the brushroll bearings. Spools formed in the end caps cvapture threads flowing outwardly along the brushroll to prevent the threads from working their way back to the bearing. In a preferred construction, the spindle carries tufts which are angled toward the ends of the spindle in order to encourage the flow of threads toward the ends of the spindle. The brushroll assembly is particularly suited for use with a wooden spindle since the thread guard and the stub shaft synergistically combine to retain the end assembly against the spindle even if the end spindle expands or contracts due to changes in ambient humidity.

    • A vacuum cleaner having an improved transmission. The transmission includes speed reduction gearing and forward and reverse clutching elements which provide high power capacity, large speed reduction, durability, quiet operation and smooth power engagement. The main power train elements all rotate on parallel axes and the forward and reverse clutching elements are essentially independent of one another and resistant to wear. The transmission has an actuating mechanism which is connected to an upright handle on the vacuum cleaner and allows the appliance to respond to moderate pushing or pulling forces applied to the handle by the user. The vacuum cleaner also has improved bearings for rotatably supporting the wheel shaft of the appliance and aligning itself to the housing of the appliance.

    • A self-aligning bearing structure for vacuum cleaner brushes and the like includes a plastic sleeve and a metal bearing element. The sleeve is initially formed with a flared end, allowing the bearing element to be inserted to provide a subassembly. The subassembly is then pressed axially into a cylindrical bore in the vacuum cleaner brush body. During such insertion, the flared end is deflected inwardly to produce a spherical socket which mates with a spherical periphery on the bearing element. Relative rotation between the sleeve and bearing element is prevented by a plurality of peripherally spaced teardrop-shaped projections formed on the sleeve which fit into teardrop-shaped recesses on the bearing element. The recesses are sufficiently closely spaced and are shaped in cooperation with the projections so that the recesses and projections automatically interfit upon assembly, and can therefore be assembled by automated equipment which does not require special orientation means. The interfitting projections and recesses prevent relative rotation between the sleeve and bearing element without requiring close tolerances in the manufacture of the components of the bearing.

    • A float switch assembly for selectively energizing and deenergizing a fluid pump or other electronic equipment responsive to the rise and fall of a fluid level within a reservoir and a method of manufacturing or assembling the float switch assembly. The assembly includes a hollow tube having an open end wherein a mercury tilt switch is fixed. A plurality of conductors covered with a non-conductive material extend within the tube open end and are connected to the switch so that a current path may be provided between the conductors responsive to the angle of the switch. Ridges are provided on the outer surface of the tube near the open end and, a float bulb is provided substantially surrounding the tube below the ridges and sealingly connected upon the ridges. A potting epoxy compound surrounds the switch and the conductors within the tube so that electrical contact with a fluid through the open end is prevented. A cap is placed on the tube open end and is locked into place. During the method of manufacture, the float bulb is flow molded directly onto the hollow tube by surrounding the tube with a resilient heated plastic, crimping the float bulb plastic upon the tube ridges and forcing air through the tube open end and two holes on the tube wall so as to enlarge the float bulb plastic to a desired float bulb shape.

    • A fuel burner apparatus for converting fossil fuel such as gas into heat. A cylindrical burner body is provided having an air inlet and a flame opening wherethrough flames, combustion gases and any unburned particles of fuel exit. A flame spreader apparatus is connected to the flame opening for evenly distributing the flames, combustion gases and unburned fuel particles coming out of the fuel burner. The fuel spreader apparatus includes a fuel spreader, a stem connected substantially perpendicular thereto and three leg portions connected at one end thereof to each other and at the other end thereof to the flame burner opening. The stem is connected to the meeting point of the three leg portions. A two-stage gas valve or a slow opening gas valve is provided for controlling the rate at which the fuel valve opens and allows fuel to enter the fuel burner. The fuel burner is connected to a heat exchanger which has a flue line and a blower connected to the flue line. The blower pulls non-turbulent combustion air through the fuel burner.
