    • There is provided a method of calculating the degradation over time of the quality of data recorded on an optical disk in a short time. In the method, when user data is recorded on a data area, a test signal including a component in which the signal level is smaller than a reference value, is recorded on a test area. Then, the test signal is reproduced from the test area when a predetermined time has passed, to calculate the quality degradation of the user data from the evaluation result. Alternatively, every time when the user data is recorded/reproduced on/from the data area, the test signal is recorded/reproduced repeatedly on/from the test area. Then, the test signal is reproduced from the test area at a predetermined timing, to calculate the quality degradation of the user data from the evaluation result.

    • In laser power control, optical and electronic components are subjected to correction on their temperature characteristics to stabilize write/read characteristics. The present invention comprises a power detector which detects the power of laser light generated by a pickup, a temperature detector which detects the temperature in the pickup, a calculating unit which calculates a target value of the power of laser light generated by the pickup according to the detected temperature, and a power control unit which performs control so that the pickup generates laser light with the power based on the target value. The calculating unit sets a target value so that the characteristics of an objective lens and the power detector in the pickup may be corrected based on their temperature characteristics.

    • The present invention relates to a recording/reproducing device that records data on a double-sided recordable optical disk for storage and management purposes. The device includes a unit which stores a plurality of optical disks, a unit which records data onto and reproduces data from an upper side of an optical disk, a unit which records data onto and reproduces data from a lower side of an optical disk, a unit which conveys an optical disk between the disk storage unit and each recording/reproducing unit. When a request for reading data recorded on the lower side of the disk is received while the upper side is being written onto, a control unit interrupts a data recording process on the upper side, reproduces data recorded on the lower side, and after completion of reproducing the recorded data, resumes the interrupted data recording process.
