    • Disclosed is a system of image data conversion, capable of setting conversion characteristics with more ease even for data having mixed image attributes, and of reducing the amount of data and the size of memory required. The conversion system includes processing elements in a processor array, each including at least an input data register, character registers, an attribute register, and a global processor, so that a calculator in each of the processing elements operates to select, and store in the character registers, the data set, xi, yi, and ai, corresponding to attribute data stored in the attribute register, to be conversion processed subsequently according to an expression stored in the global processor. The global processor assume overall control such as writing raster image data x into each of processing elements corresponding to each attribute data from a data memory to character registers, imparting an operation instruction set to each calculator for performing the data conversion, and outputting conversion processed data yi written into an output register.

    • An image processing apparatus which achieves a wide variety of processing functions and large-scale processing, even with a small-scale programmable data processing unit, and which enables cost reductions. This image processing apparatus comprises: a programmable data processing unit; a data input unit for inputting image data; a data output unit for outputting processed image data; and a data memory, or the like, for temporarily storing input image data and processed image data. In the data processing unit, a plurality of processing programs are successively loaded, in a prescribed order, and for each processing program thus loaded, a process of reading in image data from the data memory, executing processing according to the processing program and returning the processed image data to the data memory, is repeated. The plurality of processing programs are stored on a storage medium, and a control CPU, for example, successively selects the plurality of processing programs stored on the storage medium in a prescribed order and loads same to the data processing unit.

The memory stores at least one gamma conversion algorithm and a plurality of parameter sets corresponding to predefined gray-scale ranges. Then, the gamma conversion processor performs at a time in parallel a gamma conversion operation with respect to input gray-scale values of successive pixels of an input image data stream using the gamma conversion algorithm and the selected suitable parameter set, and generates a serial output gray-scale signal based on a result of the gamma conversion operation and the data stored in the parameter registers.
