    • A method to manage a call in a communication system and an access node of the communication system are disclosed. The method includes receiving, by the communication system, a call request for a voice call from a first device to communicate with a second device, wherein the second device is a subscriber of the communication system, and transmitting, by the communication system to the first device, a first message comprising an indication that the second device is operating in a text message-only mode, when the second device is roaming and a roaming usage of the second device meets a roaming criteria. The access node may be configured to transmit to the first device the first message, when the first device requests to establish a call with the second device through the access node, the second device is roaming, and a roaming usage of the second device meets the roaming criteria.

    • A base station determines occupancy of a channel used for message communication and transmits channel occupancy data to access terminals operable to transmit messages via the channel. An access terminal receives characters for sending a text message via the channel and determines whether the channel occupancy exceeds an occupancy threshold. If the channel occupancy exceeds the threshold, the access terminal transmits characters of the text message to the base station via multiple messages. Each of those messages including a number of characters that does not exceed a maximum number of characters associated with the threshold. If the channel occupancy does not exceed the threshold, the access terminal transmits characters of the text message to the base station via a single message so long as the number of characters does not exceed a maximum number of characters for sending a complete text message to the base station via a single message.

    • Methods and systems are provided for conducting power control based on reverse-link RF conditions. In an embodiment, a base station periodically calculates a reverse noise rise (RNR), periodically calculates a collective reverse-link frame error rate (RFER), and periodically checks whether a new call-origination message has been received. If a call origination has not been received, the base station checks whether the RNR is less than a threshold. If the RNR is less than the threshold, the base station sends power-up commands to each of mobile stations. If the RNR is not less than the threshold, the base station sends power-down commands to each of the mobile stations so long as the collective RFER is less than a maximum RFER. If a call origination has been received, the base station sends power-down commands to each of the mobile stations until the collective RFER reaches the maximum RFER.

    • A method and system is disclosed for maintaining codec consistency across a communication session. When a communication session is set up for an access terminal (AT) operating in a wireless communication system, a network device, such a base station, can determine a coding rate to assign the AT for its air interface in a manner that accounts for network capacity variations spatially and/or temporally across the session. If the requested communication session is determined to be with a landline device, then a higher coding rate may be used than might otherwise be selected. If the requested session is with another AT, then a coding rate that best accommodates the air interfaces of both ATs may be used. If the AT is predicted to handoff to multiple sectors during the session, then a coding rate that best accommodates the air interfaces of all the predicted handoff sectors may be used.

    • An access terminal in a coverage area of an access network may be monitoring a level of loading on the coverage area's reverse link, such as by monitoring a series of reverse activity bits sent by the access network. The access terminal may then detect new data for transmission to the access network and responsively select a reverse-link data rate based on the monitored level of loading. In this respect, the access terminal may select (a) a first data rate (e.g., a reverse-link data rate at which the access terminal last transmitted data) if the access terminal detects a low load, and (b) a second data rate (e.g., a minimum available reverse-link data rate) if the access terminal detects a high load, where the second data rate is lower than the first data rate. The access terminal may also consider its location in selecting the reverse-link data rate.
