    • An integral removable duplex module for use in conjunction with a reproduction processor is disclosed including two paper trays, a first operable as a duplex copy buffer tray or a paper tray and a second operable as an auxiliary paper tray, each tray having a copysheet feeder associated therewith comprised of a single cam operated mechanism having two cantilevered arms supporting constantly rotating feed rollers suspended above each paper tray and associated tray elevator mechanisms which enhances copysheet feeding when the feed rollers are pivoted toward the trays into copysheet feeding position and maintain copysheet trays in non-feeding positions during non-feeding operation. Copysheets are received in the duplex copy buffer tray from the reproduction processor via a reversible exit nip at the output of the processor, which directs sheets passed to an output back to a duplex module paper path, for repassing through the reproduction processor. Papers entering the module may be directed to either the duplex copy buffer tray or a trayless path which passes copysheets directly back to the processor. A method for operating the duplex module is described to efficient use of the trayless path, by directing copysheets thereto depending on the number of copies to be made. Accordingly, copysheets may be directable to the duplex tray or trayless path at various times during any run. Further use of the trayless path is made to advantageously improve two-up copying feature paper handling. Duplex operations are disabled on separation of the module from the reproduction processor.

    • In a document sheet feeding and registration apparatus for deskewing a document sheet relative to a desired copying position on a copier platen while feeding the document sheet onto the platen into said copying position, there is disclosed a method and apparatus including obtaining an electrical signal corresponding to the actual velocity of the document sheet being fed onto the platen, and actuating an automatic document sheet deskewing device at a precise actuating time occurring slightly before the document sheet reaches the copying position, so that the actuating time of said document sheet deskewing corresponds to the actual velocity of the document sheet. The electrical signal corresponding to the actual document sheet velocity may be obtained by counting the elapsed time between the actuation of first and second switches substantially spaced from one another along the document sheet path upstream of the copier platen. The actuating time of the document sheet deskewing device may be a resettable time delay count after the actuation of said second switch, which time delay count is resettable by a change in the counted time period between the actuation of said first and second switches. The automatic document sheet deskewing device may comprise a releaseable skew preventing document feeder releasing the document sheet at said actuating time to another feeder for briefly driving the document sheet into a registration aligning edge while freely allowing deskewing movement of the document sheet thereagainst after said actuating time.

    • An automatic document handling system for copying documents in a pre-collated recirculation manner with minimal document handling to provide pre-collated output copy sets. The documents may be loaded manually in a cassette unit removed from a xerographic copier. The cassette unit comprises two document retaining webs commonly wound on two scrolls. The documents are retained on a first web at all times. The second web separates from the first web only in the optical imaging area so as to allow unobstructed exposure of the documents. The second web separates by forming a loop around the scrolls from separating rollers at opposite sides of the imaging area, and winds up on one scroll as it is unwound from the other scroll. Positive document retention is provided by the second web even though the first web is outside wound.

    • A method for producing a continuous web of printed material for use in creating mailpieces. The continuous web has a width and a length, the length comprised of a series of attached sheets. The series of attached sheets are comprising envelope sheets and rectangular content pages. The content pages are rectangular in shape and may be oriented relative to the envelope sheets in a number of different configurations. In some configurations, two sets of content pages and/or envelope sheets can be printed across the width of the web. Sheets for forming business return envelopes may be printed in series with the content pages and envelope sheets. BREs may include individualized return addresses. A control code may be printed on one or more of the sheets for a given mailpiece, providing information for controlling assembly of the mailpiece. Two sets of sheets may be printed across the width of the web by printing content pages onto the continuous web such that two end-to-end content pages are printed across the width of the web. Positioning of mail content pages and envelope sheets for a given mailpiece may be optimized based on respective processing times determined for the system.

    • An apparatus and method for positioning objects at a desired reference position, including a sensor for determining the length of each object/mailpiece from a leading to a trailing edge, a transport mechanism having a positionable drive element for transporting the object/mailpiece, and a controller or processor for controlling the position of the drive element to release the object/mailpiece at a desired reference position. The described embodiments of the invention relate to positioning an object/mailpiece in a clamp assembly of a mixed mail sorter. The jaws of the clamp assembly are separated to receive the object/mailpiece by a pair of spiral cams. The spiral cams interpose and engage tabs of each jaw to open and close the clamp assembly as they concomitantly effect translation of the clamp assembly linearly past the positioning apparatus. The apparatus and method ensures predictable conveyance and release of objects/mailpieces while being manipulated by automated handling equipment.

    • A method and system for sorting mail includes the steps of imaging a face surface of the mailpieces to acquire mailpiece delivery information and distributing the mailpiece image to a virtual sorting station. The virtual sorting station is operative to sort each mailpiece image into one of a plurality of database files based upon common mailpiece delivery information. Depending upon the number of virtual sorting stations required to perform the sorting operation, the mailpiece delivery information contained in each database file may be processed by a system controller and/or transmitted to an automated mailpiece sorting device where each mailpiece is physically sorted into one of a plurality of mailpiece containers. The system for sorting mail includes an imaging device, a virtual sorting station for virtually sorting the mailpiece images and an automated sorting station for physically sorting the actual mailpieces. The system may include a plurality of virtual sorting stations wherein operators at each station provide address interpretation data to sort the mailpieces.
