    • In an optical head apparatus for recording or reproducing information onto or from an optical disc, a carriage is movable along a guide shaft extending in a direction parallel with the radial direction of the optical disc, and an armature is mounted on the carriage so that it can rotate about a pivotal axis perpendicular to the surface of the optical disc. An objective lens is fixed to the armature and positioned to traverse the tracks on the optical disc when the armature rotates. Guide yokes extend in parallel with the guide shaft. Tracking and carriage-servo coils are fixed to the armature and have a hollow through which the guide yokes loosely extend. A magnetic field means creates magnetic lines of force perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the guide yokes and parallel with the surface of the optical disc. A drive circuit supplies currents to the tracking and carriage-servo coils in such directions as to produce electromagnetic forces in parallel with each other thereby driving the armature along the guide yokes or in such directions as to produce electromagnetic forces in antiparallel with each other to rotate the armature about the pivotal axis.

    • An electric power steering system (20) comprises a control device (32) which controls a direct-current motor (49) for operatively providing auxiliary torque to a steering shaft (26) in dependence on steering torque (Ts) acting on the steering shaft. The control device (32) includes a control signal generating circuit (70) which generates a PWM signal (t3, T4, T5) for controlling the motor in dependence on the steering torque, and a motor drive circuit (80) which receives the PWM signal and impresses an on-off voltage to the motor, the drive circuit (80) having a close circuit (49-86-80a, 49-83-80d) in which an electric current (Ia) due to an inductance of the motor flows while the on-off voltage is off. The steering system (20) further comprises a mechanism (76) for detecting a steering speed (Ns) of a steering wheel. The control signal generating circuit (70) generates the PWM signal in dependence, in a positive steering state in which the rotating direction of the steering wheel is coincident with the acting direction of the steering torque, on a first function (125, 126) and, in a steering wheel returning state in which the rotating direction of the steering wheel is not coincident with the acting direction of the steering torque, on a second function (127, 128), having the steering torque and the steering speed as parameters thereof.

    • A motor-driven power steering system in a motor vehicle having a body, a steering wheel, and steerable wheels. The power steering system includes a linkage mechanism including tie rods coupled to the steerable wheels and an arm coupled to the tie rods and operatively connecting the steering wheel and the steerable wheels to each other. A torque detector is disposed in the linkage mechanism for detecting the torque applied to the steering wheel and generating a signal indicative of the detected torque. A motor is fixedly mounted on the body and has an output shaft, and the arm is fixed to the output shaft of the motor. The power steering system also has a power supply for energizing the motor and a control circuit responsive to the signal from the torque detector for controlling the torque generated by the motor. Noise and vibration produced by the motor is effectively prevented from being transmitted to the passenger compartment and the steering wheel.

    • An integrated valve unit for a pressure control circuit which comprises a case, a drier wholely contained in the case, and a check valve formed and positioned in an inlet of the case having a longitudinal axis perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the case. The check valve includes a cylinder chamber formed in the case having two end faces and a side wall, a fluid inlet port formed in one of the end faces, a pair of discharge ports in the side wall longitudinally spaced from each other and opening into the case, an axially slidable piston inserted into the chamber, a biasing member urging the piston towards one end face having the fluid inlet port formed therein, and an elastic seal member fixed to the piston member. The piston is capable of selectably closing the discharge ports upon axial sliding thereof. The elastic seal member is capable of sealing the portion of one end face including the fluid inlet port as the piston member slides toward that one end face. The elastic seal member can be shaped as a cup-shaped member fixed to the inlet port end face of a cylindrical piston and can have a smaller area then that of the piston end face to which it is affixed. The difference in areas of the seal member and the face of the piston operates to provide a substantially instantaneous opening and closing response to the valve which effectively prevents chattering and vibration.
