The master data set values are combined using their symmetric properties and are transferred sequentially to a digital-to-analog converter in repetitive cycles at a rate proportional to the unison pitch of the corresponding keyboard note to produce the tone color of a combination of unified tones.

    • In a musical instrument in which a plurality of data words corresponding to the amplitudes of a corresponding number of evenly spaced points defined a cycle of an audio waveform are transformed at an average rate proportional to the pitch of the tone being generated, a frequency generator is provided using a single master clock source for selectively producing the entire range of musical notes. A non-integer frequency generator is implemented which periodically adds a frequency number, corresponding to an actuated keyswitch, to itself in an adder-accumulator. Overflow pulses from the adder-accumulator address out a set of waveshape values stored in a memory. The noise produced by the unequally spaced overflow pulses is reduced by applying optimal amplitude weighting values to the output waveshape values and then adding the weighted values to provide a single value which is converted to an analog signal and furnished as the musical signal.

    • A fixed formant filter for a digital electronic instrument of the type in which musical tones are generated from waveshape data calculated independently of frequency of the tone from constituent generalized Fourier components. The Fourier components are individually scaled by scale factors selected from a set of stored scale factors which define the transfer characteristic of the fixed formant filter. Each separately addressable stored scale factor corresponds to a different frequency value in the musical scale. A scale factor is selected for separately scaling each harmonic of the tone generated in response to the particular note of the musical scale keyed on the instrument. The selected scale factors may be modified by a frequency deviation signal to provide vibrato or other frequency modulation effects. The selected scale factors are also corrected for any frequency deviation between the actual frequency of the harmonic of the keyed note being scaled and the frequency value associated with the selected scale factor.

    • An amplitude curve generator for use with an electronic organ or the like to control the musical shape of an audible tone. The generator utilizes a simple binary down counter driven from a clock source to produce a sequence of decreasing binary numbers that approximate the relative amplitudes of equally spaced points along an exponential decay curve. The count condition of the least significant bits of the counter correspond to the mantissa of number expressed in binary floating point notation. The most significant bits represent the power. The bits of the mantissa are transferred to a parallel shift circuit and shifted a number of times determined by the bits of the power to convert the number in the counter to fixed point notation. The output of the shift circuit is used to control the envelope amplitude of a musical tone. The output may be subtracted from one (2's complement) to produce a set of values that correspond to an exponential attack curve rather than a decay curve. The counter can be interrupted at any point for some period of time or counted at a different frequency to tailor the wave shape to a particular attack, decay, sustain and release pattern.

Tones corresponding to pulse-like waveshapes are simulated by using harmonic coefficient values associated with a pulse waveshape of specified shape. Apparatus is disclosed for producing sets of such harmonic coefficient values wherein each particular set is associated with a selected value of a pulse width parameter. Pulse width modulation tonal effects are achieved by changing the value of the pulse width parameter as a function of time. Means are described for including pulse width modulation as a subsystem of digital tone generators.

    • An automatic chord generating circuit for a digital polyphonic tone synthesizer having one or more keyboards. Key operated switches are connected in groups corresponding to the notes in an octave. A signal source is selectively connected by the closed switches of each group in sequence to associated ones of a plurality of signal lines. A priority circuit selectively connects a signal from only one line at a time to a corresponding one of a plurality of output lines, so that operation of more than one key in an octave produces only one output signal at a time. A switching logic circuit, responsive to digitally coded input signals identifying any one of a plurality of different chords, connects the single output signal from the priority circuit to additional ones of the output lines for activating multiple notes within the octave.
